Brutal cartel leader El Chapo complains about mistreatment, wants to return to Mexico

The Ministry of Foreign Relations of Mexico has received a letter by which José Refugio Rodríguez, lawyer for Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán, requested the intervention of the Government of Mexico so that the drug trafficker could return to Mexico from a US Prison.

The email was received on January 10 and was forwarded to the Foreign Ministry “because it is a matter within its competence,” the Mexican Embassy in the United States reported on Twitter.

Rodríguez says that El Chapo is subjected to “psychological torture” in ADX Florence, the maximum security prison where the former leader of the Sinaloa Cartel is being held. For a man who broke the bones of his rivals and beat them to a bloody pulp before shooting them in the head and burning their bodies, he knows psychological torture. Compared to the victims of the cartel he led, and in many ways continues to lead from prison with the help of his children, El Chapo continues to live a comfortable life behind bars.

“The sun does not hit him, the food is of terrible quality, and there is no healthcare; He was sick with some teeth issues, and instead of treating them, they took them out,” he said in an interview with Ciro Gómez Leyva for Radio Fórmula.

El Chapo is responsible, directly and indirectly, for the death of thousands of people who were never given the chance to see the sun again.

The lawyer mentioned having written an email to Esteban Moctezuma, Mexico’s ambassador to the United States, although he stated that he never received an acknowledgment of receipt.

Rodríguez commented that “El Chapo” feels “abandoned” by the government because, he explained, there is a treaty between Mexico and the US, by which the Mexican authorities must review the status of Guzmán Loera every six months, an action that has not occurred.

‘El Chapo’ pointed out that the government of Peña Nieto committed due process violations during his extradition to the United States, for which he asked the government of López Obrador to repair these damages and seek “the channels” that allow his return to Mexico to fulfill his sentence. Guzmán was imprisoned in Mexico and escaped before being recaptured and extradited to the United States.

President López Obrador was questioned about it at the end of his Tuesday morning conference.

“I have not seen it (the email), but let’s see it,” was his response.

‘El Chapo’ Guzmán is serving a life sentence (with an additional 30 years in prison) after being found guilty of ten charges related to drug trafficking, the main one being maintaining an ongoing criminal enterprise.

Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard pointed out that he does not see possibilities for Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán ‘s request for Mexico’s help in returning him to the country.

“Let’s see, but he is serving a sentence there, he has a sentence. So, I don’t see any chances for him, frankly,” he acknowledged in a meeting with the media.

However, the foreign minister said that the matter will be reviewed with the Prosecutor’s Office.

Contrary to what Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard had declared, the president stated in his morning press conference that, as it is an alleged violation of Human Rights, one can “seek ways” to return El Chapo to Mexico.

Rodríguez says that El Chapo is subjected to "psychological torture" in ADX Florence, the maximum security prison where the former leader of the Sinaloa . . .
