Puerto Vallarta (PVDN) – According to the 2021 Traffic Accident Statistics from the Mexican Institute of Transportation, Federal Highway 200, stretching from Tepic to Puerto Vallarta, is deemed the most perilous in Nayarit, showing a 61 percent surge in road accidents over recent years, with buses and trailers being the primary victims.
The highway has also been the site of two lethal incidents resulting in a total of 28 fatalities and over 50 injuries.
The challenging 129-kilometer stretch between Compostela and Las Varas, marked by mountainous terrain, numerous bends, and only two lanes, poses considerable risks for travelers heading toward Puerto Vallarta.
Within the span of less than two weeks, two accidents have occurred. The first took place on April 29, 2023, at the 59th kilometer of Federal Highway 200, in the Mesillas area of Compostela municipality. A truck en route to Rincón de Guayabitos tragically fell into a ravine, causing instant death to 18 passengers. Two more succumbed to their injuries last weekend from the 37 injured individuals.
The most recent mishap occurred in the early hours of Monday, May 8, at the 52nd kilometer of the Jala – Compostela highway. A Torton-type truck overturned and plunged 30 meters deep, resulting in eight fatalities and ten injuries.
The alarming casualty count on this section of the road has prompted authorities to undertake a thorough assessment of the area.
