PUERTO VALLARTA (PVDN) – July continues the low season for international tourist cruises in Puerto Vallarta with only five scheduled arrivals, echoing the same number seen in June. This information comes according to the Administration of the National Port System (ASIPONA) Puerto Vallarta.
Four out of the five cruise ships to dock will be the Carnival Panorama, a regular visitor to the city. The Panorama is scheduled to arrive each Tuesday of the month. The remaining arrival will be the Navigator of the Seas, set to dock on the 4th of July, creating a rare double arrival for that Tuesday.
The low season for the Mexican Riviera route spans just over four months, a period when cruise companies often redirect their operations to other markets, such as Alaska, Central, and South America.
Despite this seasonal downturn, it’s worth noting that the cruise sector in Mexico has seen a full recovery. This rebound has been largely attributed to the effective pricing and promotion strategies implemented by the various shipping lines.
During the low season, cruise destinations in the Pacific tend to gravitate towards Ensenada, Baja California, and Los Cabos, Baja California Sur. Their geographical proximity to the United States makes them attractive destinations for tourists seeking shorter journeys.
In the first four months of 2023, Cabo San Lucas welcomed 400,569 cruise passengers, while Ensenada saw the arrival of 385,050 passengers. Puerto Vallarta, on the other hand, received just over 285,000 visitors. This difference can be attributed to the fact that many routes encompassing Puerto Vallarta also include Cabo San Lucas. However, many routes that dock at the southern Californian port do not extend to the Jalisco region.
The low season exacerbates this situation, as only five routes cover the seven-day journey to Puerto Vallarta, while several more serve only ports in the Baja California Peninsula, all of which set sail from Californian ports. As Puerto Vallarta pushes through the low season, the city, like the rest of the region, is preparing for an uptick in tourists as the high season approaches.
