Puerto Vallarta, long renowned as one of Mexico’s safest urban havens, has seen a stark decrease in its perception of security, according to the latest results from the National Survey of Urban Public Security (ENSU). This decline has bumped the popular tourist city from the top-ten list of Mexico’s safest cities, down to the 13th position.

The ENSU survey, conducted between May 26 and June 15, 2023, revealed a troubling trend for the city. As of June 2023, 30.7% of Puerto Vallarta’s inhabitants consider their city unsafe, a significant increase from the 26.5% recorded in March of the same year. This is despite the city’s significant recovery after a peak insecurity perception of 41% in June of 2020.

In a broader context, 62.3% of the Mexican population aged 18 and over, residing in 75 cities, reported feeling that their cities are unsafe as of June 2023. While this represents a slight increase from the 62.1% recorded in March 2023, it is notably lower than the 67.4% reported in June 2022.

Notably, Puerto Vallarta’s insecurity perception still falls significantly below the highest rates observed in Fresnillo (92.8%), Zacatecas (91.7%), and Ciudad Obregón (90.3%). Meanwhile, cities such as San Pedro Garza García (13.2%), Benito Juárez (19.8%), and Piedras Negras (20.0%) enjoy the lowest levels of insecurity perception.

The report also highlighted that ten cities and districts experienced statistically significant changes compared to March 2023, with four recording reductions and six noting increases in perceived insecurity. Puerto Vallarta’s authorities have yet to comment on the city’s slip in ranking.
