Residents across Michoacán, Colima, and Jalisco were left in awe late on Tuesday, July 25, when an unexpected celestial event – a fireball, or an exceptionally bright meteor – briefly transformed night into day. Keep reading to see the video!

Around 9:40 p.m., inhabitants of municipalities including Ciudad Guzmán, Zapotiltic, Pihuamo, Tonila, and Tamazula were treated to the natural spectacle. Social media quickly erupted with eyewitness accounts and videos capturing the phenomenon, as people sought explanations for the sudden, bright flash and accompanying roar.

State Civil Protection in Colima confirmed that the flash and accompanying roar, reminiscent of thunder, were observed in several municipalities. However, the precise cause was initially unconfirmed. “At the moment, the National Center for Communication and Civil Protection Operations (CENACOM) continues to monitor this situation to determine the causes of the perceived event in the entity, as well as in Michoacán and Jalisco,” a spokesperson stated.

Geologist Alejandro S. Méndez shed light on the event, explaining that what residents witnessed was a fireball – an exceptionally bright meteor that explodes in the Earth’s upper atmosphere. Méndez noted that our planet is regularly bombarded by such space rock fragments, which rarely have significant impact, a process ongoing for over 4.5 billion years.

“The infrasonic sensors of the Colima volcano detected the explosion of the fireball in the high atmosphere. This explosion possibly occurred at an altitude of more than 50km and was audible to people in the region,” Méndez elaborated.

According to Méndez, the fireball was roughly the size of a small car and its high-speed entry into the Earth’s atmosphere led to an explosion that was visible across various regions.

The University Center for Vulcanological Studies (CUEV) echoed Méndez’s explanation, stating that the fireball entered the atmosphere, creating a shockwave that was detected by seismometers and infrasound sensors. The data further confirmed that the sound residents heard was indeed the fireball’s contact with the atmosphere.

CUEV clarified, “Fireballs are flashing meteors that, as they traverse the sky, leave a luminous trail. When they explode, they create a rumble. Most of them disintegrate in the air.”
