PUERTO VALLARTA (PVDN) – In a startling development, Hurricane Lidia, initially categorized as a Category 1 storm on the Saffir-Simpson scale, has shifted its trajectory and is now heading toward Puerto Vallarta. The latest advisory from the National Meteorological Service suggests that the storm could intensify to a Category 2 hurricane within the next few hours.
According to the agency’s most recent data, the hurricane is expected to reach Category 2 status around 12:00 p.m. local time. The storm could make landfall in Puerto Vallarta as early as 00:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 11, although it is anticipated to have weakened to a tropical storm by that time.
Current Location and Projected Impacts
As of the 06:00 a.m. report, Hurricane Lidia is located approximately 380 kilometers west-southwest of Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, and 475 kilometers south-southeast of Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur. The extensive circulation of the storm amplifies the likelihood of torrential rains, affecting the states of Nayarit, Jalisco, Colima, and Michoacán. Intense localized rainfall is also forecast for Baja California Sur, Sinaloa, and Durango.
Advisory and Precautionary Measures
A hurricane prevention zone is currently in effect, extending from Playa Pérula, Jalisco, to Escuinapa, Sinaloa, and includes the Marías Islands in Nayarit. A separate hurricane surveillance zone is active from Manzanillo, Colima, to Playa Pérula, Jalisco.
Weather Forecast and Marine Conditions
In terms of precipitation, torrential rains are expected in Nayarit, Jalisco, Colima, and Michoacán; intense localized rains in Baja California Sur, Sinaloa, and Durango; very heavy localized rains in Zacatecas, Aguascalientes, and Guanajuato, along with heavy rains in Chihuahua.
Marine conditions are equally troubling. On the coasts of Nayarit and Jalisco, winds with gusts ranging from 120 to 150 km/h and waves of 5 to 7 meters are anticipated. In the coastal areas of Sinaloa, winds are expected to range from 100 to 120 km/h with waves reaching heights of 3 to 5 meters. For the coasts of Baja California Sur, Colima, and Michoacán, winds are likely to gust between 80 to 100 km/h and waves are forecasted to be 2 to 4 meters high.
According to the latest models, Hurricane Lidia could make landfall this afternoon or evening in the vicinity between the states of Jalisco and Nayarit.
