PUERTO VALLARTA, Jalisco – The Puerto Vallarta region is encountering significant obstacles in its efforts to combat influenza, particularly in vaccinating children under the age of five, reports the head of the Eighth Health Region of the Jalisco Health Secretariat, Jaime Álvarez Zayas. Despite the lack of hospitalizations or deaths from influenza, the region’s vaccination campaign is experiencing setbacks, primarily due to parental hesitancy.
According to Álvarez Zayas, the region is currently 72 percent behind its target in the influenza vaccination campaign. He identifies the primary issue as the reluctance among parents to authorize the vaccination of their children, especially within educational institutions. “Where we do have a delay is in the influenza vaccination. It is in schools where we are not allowed to administer the vaccine because parents do not give permission to do so,” Álvarez Zayas explained.
While the region has fortunately not recorded any severe cases of influenza, the health official emphasized the risks posed by the lack of vaccination. “Although no serious cases have been recorded, the lack of application of the vaccine puts the minors at risk, since it does not eliminate the possibility of the disease getting worse,” he highlighted.
The Jalisco Ministry of Health has set a target to administer approximately 60,000 influenza vaccines in the Puerto Vallarta area by the end of this month. The campaign is part of a broader effort to protect the community, particularly vulnerable groups such as young children, from the potential impacts of the influenza virus.
The situation underscores the challenges public health officials face in balancing preventive measures with public concerns and misconceptions about vaccination. The Eighth Health Region and the Jalisco Ministry of Health continue to urge parents to vaccinate their children, stressing the importance of community immunity in preventing the spread and escalation of influenza cases in the Puerto Vallarta region.
