The Amerigo Vespucci Will Receive a Festive Welcome to Puerto Vallarta

PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico – The esteemed Italian navy training ship, Amerigo Vespucci, named in honor of the Florentine navigator Américo Vespucio, is set to grace the shores of Puerto Vallarta next month. The ship, which is currently off the coast of Uruguay as of Friday, May 31, is on the second leg of a global voyage that commenced in June 2023. This voyage not only serves as a monumental journey around the world but also continues its traditional role in training naval cadets.

The arrival of Amerigo Vespucci in Puerto Vallarta is being meticulously coordinated by the Italian embassy in partnership with the Mexican Navy Secretariat. The ship is scheduled to dock on Tuesday, June 18, marking the beginning of a series of formal events over two days. These events will see participation from Mexican authorities across federal, state, and municipal levels, along with senior Italian officials.

In addition to the formal ceremonies, a comprehensive program of tourist activities is being organized for the crew. The Directorate of Tourism and Economic Development has been entrusted with planning these activities, with anticipated support from the Tourism Trust (Fidetur).

Luis Antonio Villaseñor Nolasco, director of Fidetur, expressed his enthusiasm about the visit, stating, “It is an honor for the destination to have been chosen for this visit; This is a sign of the great renown that Puerto Vallarta has worldwide, where our Italian guests will know the best of Mexican hospitality.” He further highlighted that the Italian authorities and sailors would have the opportunity to experience the myriad of attractions that make Puerto Vallarta a premier cultural and tourist destination in Mexico.

Designed in 1930 by Francesco Rotundi, the Amerigo Vespucci is celebrated as one of the most beautiful ships in the world. Its visit underscores the strong ties between Italy and Mexico, and it is expected to be a memorable event for both the local community and the ship’s crew.

As Puerto Vallarta prepares to welcome the Amerigo Vespucci, the visit promises to enhance the city’s international prestige and provide a unique cultural exchange opportunity, showcasing the best of Mexican hospitality to the distinguished Italian visitors.
