Puerto Vallarta Welcomes 32,000 Tourists During Day of the Dead Festivities

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico — The vibrant coastal city of Puerto Vallarta celebrated a record-breaking Day of the Dead weekend, welcoming approximately 32,000 visitors from November 1 to 3. According to the federal Ministry of Tourism (SECTUR), the city achieved the highest hotel occupancy among Mexican beach destinations, with an impressive 81.2% occupancy rate and an average of 2.27 occupants per room.

Tourists contributed significantly to the local economy, with an average expenditure of 29,000 pesos per person throughout the weekend. The influx generated an economic boost of just over 900 million pesos for the destination.

One of the standout attractions was the monumental Catrina installed on the city’s iconic boardwalk. Since 2021, this towering figure has been a centerpiece of the celebrations, and in 2023, it broke the Guinness World Record for the tallest Day of the Dead Catrina, standing over 28 meters high. This year, the colossal Catrina and her accompanying pet will remain on display until November 17, delighting both locals and visitors alike.

“This monumental Catrina has become a symbol of our city’s rich cultural heritage,” said Luis Villaseñor Nolasco, director of the Tourism Trust. “It embodies our commitment to innovating and surprising our visitors, solidifying Puerto Vallarta as one of Mexico’s premier destinations to celebrate the Day of the Dead.”

The successful weekend marks a strong start to a bustling season for Puerto Vallarta. The city anticipates continued high occupancy rates throughout November, bolstered by a calendar filled with major events. Highlights include the Vallarta Grill Festival Autumn Edition, the 29th International Gourmet Festival, the Puerto Vallarta México by UTMB 2024 trail running series, and the Rainbow Puerto Vallarta 2024 race.

The momentum continues during the Mexican Revolution holiday from November 16 to 18, featuring the 11th Pacific Games Puerto Vallarta, the 68th Puerto Vallarta International Marlin and Tuna Fishing Tournament, the 19th National Botanical Gardens Day, the Vista Vallarta Golf Club 23rd Anniversary Tournament, the second Cruce Vallarta open water swimming competition, and the Puerto Vallarta International Fashion Week 2024.

“Thanks to its privileged geographic location and countless charms, our destination attracts more and more important events and visitors seeking unique experiences,” added Villaseñor Nolasco. “Our cultural and entertainment offerings continue to grow, and our infrastructure ensures successful events that appeal to both organizers and the public.”

Beyond its stunning beaches, Puerto Vallarta offers a rich tapestry of cultural attractions and entertainment options. The city’s commitment to enhancing its tourist offerings ensures that visitors have a plethora of experiences to choose from, solidifying its reputation as a must-visit destination in Mexico.
