Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – Local, state, and federal authorities are conducting an extensive search for a 16-year-old boy from Los Altos de Jalisco, who disappeared Monday afternoon in Puerto Vallarta’s polluted Holy Beach waters. The minor entered the sea to rescue his younger sister, but both siblings were quickly swept up by a dangerous rip current. While a bystander was able to save the girl, the young man was pulled farther out and has not been seen since.
According to officials, the incident began late Monday afternoon when the siblings entered the beach area despite Holy Beach being closed to the public due to pollution risks. The teenager’s sister was initially caught in a rip current, which prompted her brother to leap into the water to assist. Their efforts were quickly thwarted by the strength of the current, which dragged both deeper into the sea.
A nearby individual immediately attempted a rescue, managing to save the younger sister but losing sight of the teen. The initial emergency call was placed shortly after 5 p.m., activating lifeguards from Puerto Vallarta’s Civil Protection and Fire Department, who responded to the scene. Local teams were soon joined by the State Civil Protection unit and the Mexican Navy, deploying jet skis and boats to conduct a coordinated search effort. However, deteriorating visibility and strong currents forced the operation’s suspension around 7:30 p.m.
Rescue teams established a command post at Holy Beach on Monday evening, continuing the search early Tuesday morning. As of midday Tuesday, the boy’s whereabouts remain unknown. Salvador Castillo, head of the municipal Civil Protection lifeguard team, confirmed that search efforts would persist indefinitely until the minor is located. Castillo stressed that the temporary command post will remain active to support the search and assist the family.
The tragedy comes less than a year after a similar incident in January, when a 29-year-old tourist from Puebla also vanished in the rip currents off Puerto Vallarta’s coastline. Despite an extensive three-week search, authorities were unable to recover the man’s body, underscoring the ongoing dangers of the city’s beaches.
Pollution levels, unyielding rip currents, and the risks associated with defying beach closures have made areas like Holy Beach hazardous for even the most experienced swimmers. Environmental advocates and city officials have repeatedly warned the public about these dangers, citing an increased need for awareness and adherence to beach closure signs.
Authorities urge beachgoers to heed local warnings and to avoid closed beach areas, particularly during high-risk periods when currents are especially powerful. The search for the missing teen will continue, bolstered by all three levels of government working collaboratively to ensure his family receives closure.
