Ceabien steps up sewer cleanup in Bahías de Huatulco

Oaxaca’s water agency is intensifying sanitary work across Bahías de Huatulco, targeting problem points in the sewer network with specialized desazolve crews. The agency says the goal is simple: reduce overflow risks in high-traffic areas and keep hydraulic infrastructure in working order.

Teams have been rotating through sectors, including U2 and H3, responding to citizen reports and clearing obstructions that strain the system during the rains. In recent operations, crews used a Vactor and a Vac-Con—industrial suction and jetting trucks—to break up and remove blockages.

Why maintenance matters in a tourist town

Huatulco’s economy depends on clean beaches and reliable services. Sewer backups don’t just foul streets; they jeopardize hotel operations and public health during peak occupancy. That’s why local and state authorities have linked preventive maintenance to broader water-quality efforts on the coast.

In late July and again in August, Oaxaca’s communications office documented Ceabien’s routine and emergency interventions. The work included jetting lines, vacuuming sludge, and restoring flow in streets such as Tamiagua and along key corridors near Santa Cruz and Chahué. The cadence signals a shift from reactive fixes to ongoing, scheduled maintenance.

Ceabien reports recent actions in Sector U2 and parts of H3, paired with follow-ups after citizen requests. The agency frames the work as part of a permanent program to prevent sanitary risks in an area with heavy visitor traffic. The timeline shows sustained activity since late June, when Hurricane Erick’s impacts forced additional clean-outs.

This operational push sits atop a complex legacy. Huatulco’s planned resort (the old FONATUR “CIP” model) relies on a backbone of collectors and treatment plants. Official records show a municipal and federal patchwork of assets, including at least one plant of 170 liters per second design capacity inside the development. Keeping those systems functioning—and upgrading where needed—remains essential as the town grows.

Beach water quality and public health

The renewed attention comes as federal tests placed La Bocana on the summer list of beaches “not suitable” for recreation, after samples exceeded the 200 NMP/100 mL enterococcus threshold. Oaxaca’s notice confirmed a precautionary closure and listed 14 state beaches that met the standard. Sewer performance is not the only factor in beach quality, but it is a critical one that authorities track.

COFEPRIS’ national bulletin stressed that most beaches passed the seasonal review, yet 16 sites in several states—including one in Huatulco—did not. Those findings, and the government’s new “Playas MX” app, underline a transparency push that lets residents and hotel managers check results in real time and report anomalies.

Huatulco’s municipal government and CONAGUA say they are advancing a local Water Plan to align investments in potable water, sewer, and sanitation. The plan envisions tripartite funding and sets a policy frame for upgrades that go beyond unclogging a pipe. That longer horizon matters if the resort wants to keep pace with growth and climate-driven extremes.

The takeaway is practical. Clearing lines now prevents street spills later. It protects restaurants and hotels that serve both residents and visitors. And, alongside monitoring at the beaches, it helps keep the coast open for the people who live there all year.
