Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Oct. 7, 2026 — Jalisco is preparing for a possible coastal approach by Tropical Storm Simón Oct. 10–11, state Civil Protection officials said Wednesday.
The National Hurricane Center’s 3 p.m. advisory placed Simón 485 kilometers southeast of Manzanillo, Colima. Maximum sustained winds reached 65 kph, or 40 mph.
The center forecasts hurricane strength by late Thursday and a possible major hurricane by Saturday. Its advisory listed no coastal watches or warnings at that time.
Local concerns include beaches and flooded roads
Jalisco Civil Protection identified heavy rain, strong winds and high surf as potential weekend hazards along the state’s coast. The hurricane center also warned of dangerous surf and rip currents along southwestern and west-central Mexico through the weekend.
Puerto Vallarta has experienced disruptions from recent storms. We reported flooding in Las Glorias, along Francisco Villa and on Avenida México during Polo’s rains Sept. 26. Floodwater closed lanes and disrupted businesses.
Rachel’s surf later damaged a structure at Playa de Oro, as our Oct. 3 report documented. Red flags remained across the city’s beaches that day. Latest Local Updates and Alerts
The mayor subsequently proposed seeking emergency funds for Malecón and hotel-zone repairs following damage from Polo and Rachel.
State prepares for several possible coastal tracks
Sergio Ramírez López, director of Jalisco’s Civil Protection and Fire Department, announced emergency coordination Wednesday. Plans included meetings with the state emergency committee and coastal mayors.
“One scenario is that it could enter between Colima and Jalisco,” Ramírez said in Spanish. He also described a possible entry between Cabo Corrientes and Tomatlán, among other coastal scenarios.
Ramírez said the projections could change over the next 48 to 72 hours as emergency preparations continue.
The hurricane center’s afternoon forecast discussion expects Simón to continue west-northwest through Thursday. A turn toward the northwest and north is forecast Friday.
That forecast identifies potential wind and storm-surge impacts along parts of Mexico’s west-central coast over the weekend and early next week.
Regional rainfall forecast identifies flooding risk
The hurricane center forecasts 8 to 12 inches of rain across portions of southwestern Mexico through Sunday. That equals roughly 20 to 30 centimeters.
Its afternoon advisory places isolated potential totals of 15 to 25 inches in parts of Colima and Michoacán. Those amounts equal approximately 38 to 63 centimeters.
The center warned that the rainfall could cause life-threatening flooding and mudslides, particularly in areas with steep terrain.
