Comalcalco launches youth peacebuilders program

Comalcalco, Tabasco – Comalcalco made history this week by becoming the first municipality in Mexico to launch the federal Jóvenes Sembradores de Paz Comalcalco program, a prevention strategy aimed at curbing addictions and promoting healthy lifestyles among adolescents and young adults. The kickoff event brought together municipal leadership and federal violence-prevention officials to formally enlist 80 young people as community outreach agents.

The ceremony was presided over by Mayor Ovidio Peralta Suárez and Undersecretary for Violence Prevention Esthela Damián Peralta, who delivered identity kits and support cards to the new cohort. The cards mark the participants’ official status as “Peace Planters,” equipping them to act as trusted intermediaries in neighborhoods where risk factors for violence and substance abuse are high.

Prevention rooted in community trust

Mayor Peralta Suárez framed the initiative as a continuation of a broader local security turnaround. He urged the young participants to carry out their roles “with pride and responsibility,” stressing that their daily work will be central to sustaining the recent drop in crime. Comalcalco has seen crime fall by more than 30 percent in the past ten months, a trend the mayor linked to prevention efforts and renewed social investment in neighborhoods such as Tomás Garrido, Tecolutilla, Carlos Greene, and Aldama.

“The commitment of the governments of Claudia Sheinbaum and Javier May is creating the conditions for our youth to transform their reality and build a better future,” Peralta Suárez said, underscoring that social justice is beginning to take hold in communities long underserved. His remarks positioned the program not as a short-term campaign but as part of a shifting civic narrative where young people are co-authors of peace rather than passive beneficiaries.

Program design ties education, culture, and care to prevention

Undersecretary Esthela Damián Peralta laid out the operational core of the initiative: each youth will dedicate 25 hours weekly to hands-on outreach in their own communities. Their tasks include helping peers stay in school, overcome addictions, and get involved in sports, cultural and recreational activities. The young peacebuilders will also organize tournaments, workshops, neighborhood clean-ups, art classes, and provide support to older adults—creating multiple touchpoints for positive engagement.

Damián emphasized that the strength of the program lies in its grassroots footprint. By embedding motivated young people into daily community life, the initiative aims to intercept risk trajectories before they harden into cycles of exclusion and violence. The mix of structured activity and informal peer influence is meant to rebuild social ties eroded by neglect and marginalization.

Youth voice centers dignity and broader social change

Program beneficiary Jenner López Jiménez brought a personal and moral frame to the launch. He argued that true peace requires addressing the structural roots of instability—poverty, discrimination, and social exclusion—not merely their symptoms. “This project rebuilds the social fabric through youth, who have the power to change Mexico,” he said, thanking officials for backing a strategy that centers dignity alongside prevention.

López Jiménez’s remarks echoed the event’s broader theme: youth are not problems to be managed but assets to be activated. The identity kits and public recognition are meant to signal that the municipality and federal partners consider these young people legitimate agents of transformation, capable of reshaping how neighborhoods relate to authority, opportunity, and one another.

Comalcalco as a model and testing ground

By opening the first chapter of Jóvenes Sembradores de Paz Comalcalco, the municipality positions itself as a reference point for replication elsewhere in Mexico. Local officials conveyed that the model will be adapted case by case, but with the same pillars: educational support, addiction prevention, cultural activation, and intergenerational outreach. The early cohort of 80 is both a pilot and a promise—if sustained, their visibility could translate into measurable shifts in community cohesion and public safety narratives.

To ensure accountability and amplification, the young peacebuilders’ work will be tracked alongside support from a mixed team of municipal and federal facilitators. The goal is not only to reduce crime statistics but to seed new leadership pathways and counter the sense of abandonment that often breeds despair. Officials said future expansion will depend on early outcomes, community feedback, and the ability to integrate families, educators, and civic groups into the effort.

Next steps and sustainability

Authorities signaled they are already exploring mechanisms to bring more youth into the program and deepen its reach within Comalcalco. Strengthening ties with schools, neighborhood associations, and local service providers is central to that plan. The success of Jóvenes Sembradores de Paz Comalcalco will be judged not only by crime metrics but by how normalized youth leadership becomes in spaces where fear and apathy once dominated.

For now, the municipality is banking on the moral and practical energy of the first generation of peacebuilders to keep the momentum. The program’s launch sends a clear signal: peace in Comalcalco is being pursued not only through enforcement, but through investment in young people’s capacity to care for each other.
