Purple and red flags are posted at river mouths and Marina Vallarta beaches as officials warn of crocodile movement during rains.

Crocodile warnings expand on Vallarta beaches today

Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, June 30, 2026 – Purple and red flags are flying at several beach zones in Puerto Vallarta after crocodile activity was reported near river mouths and in the Marina Vallarta hotel corridor, turning Tuesday’s beach warning into a map of the city’s highest-risk crocodile areas during rainy season.

The warning applies to marked areas near the mouths of the Cuale River and Pitillal River, as well as beach areas in front of the Westin and Marriott hotels in Marina Vallarta, based on the municipal beach flag update shared by Puerto Vallarta Civil Protection and Fire Department.

Purple flags indicate dangerous wildlife or other biological risk in the area. Red flags mean swimming is prohibited. The combination does not mean every beach in Puerto Vallarta is closed, but it does mean people should stay out of the water where flags are posted and follow lifeguards’ instructions.

Puerto Vallarta’s crocodile risk is concentrated where rivers, canals, estuaries, and the bay meet: the Cuale, the Pitillal, the Marina Vallarta canal system, Boca Negra, Boca de Tomates, and the Ameca River corridor. During heavy rains, water flow increases through those channels, pushing crocodiles from estuaries and canals toward beaches and nearshore waters.

Salvador Castillón González, head of municipal lifeguards, said the city already maintains fixed wildlife-warning flags in several areas, including the mouths of the Cuale and Pitillal rivers and the northern hotel zone from Marina Vallarta toward the Ameca River. He said rainfall increases crocodile movement through waterways that drain into the bay.

The latest warning follows Friday’s fatal crocodile attack in Marina Vallarta, where a 28-year-old man was attacked near the beach in front of the Marriott. His body was recovered the following morning after a search involving state Civil Protection, municipal rescuers, and the Mexican Navy. PVDN has reported on the case and the official response in Body Found After Puerto Vallarta Crocodile Attack and After Fatal Crocodile Attack Vallarta Patrols Expand.

Researchers at the University of Guadalajara have previously described Puerto Vallarta as part of the natural transit area for the American crocodile, especially near river mouths and former wetland zones that have been reshaped by urban growth. In a UDG report on responsible tourism and crocodile habitat, specialists noted that Marina Vallarta and the airport area were built over former wetland corridors, while beaches near Boca Negra and Boca de Tomates remain closely tied to crocodile habitat.

Crocodile warnings are often misunderstood as rare beach closures or isolated sightings. In Puerto Vallarta, they are more often tied to predictable geography: murky water near river mouths, estuary outlets, canals, and the northern edge of the bay. Those are the areas where the risk of swimming rises after rain, especially at dawn, dusk, and night.

People heading to the beach Tuesday should check the flag at the access point before entering the water. If a purple or red flag is posted, do not swim in that zone. Keep pets and children away from river mouths, canal edges, and mangrove areas, and do not approach or attempt to photograph crocodiles from close range.

Crocodile sightings should be reported to 911 or directly to lifeguards or Civil Protection personnel on the beach. The flag status can change through the day as conditions shift, especially after rain or new wildlife reports.
