Ensenada meth seizure

Ensenada meth seizure tops three tons near rural site

Federal troops and the National Guard seized more than three tons of methamphetamine in rural Ensenada after finding two abandoned vehicles loaded with plastic containers of “crystal.” Authorities placed the drugs under federal custody and are tracing how such a large shipment moved through the south-of-Ensenada corridor. Officials and local outlets say the load weighed 3,580 kilos, making it one of the most significant meth seizures in the state this year.

Ensenada meth seizure

The find was brutal in its simplicity. Soldiers and National Guard agents came across a white panel van and a pickup left on a dirt track south of Ensenada. Inside were hundreds of plastic containers filled with meth. The load totaled 3,580 kilograms. The vehicles and the drug were turned over to the federal prosecutor’s office (FGR).

Local daily El Mexicano reported the operation took place on August 19 near Ejido Uruapan. The paper states that Army personnel first located the vehicles and then moved the shipment to FGR facilities.

Where it happened and why that matters

Other regional outlets place the seizure in the Ejido Zorrillo area, in a scrubland zone used to stash loads. That patch sits off the Transpeninsular Highway, a corridor dotted with checkpoints and ranch roads that let traffickers duck in and out of view. La Jornada described an “almacén” near Cañón Buenavista, about 24 km south of the port, in the same south-of-Ensenada belt.

This corridor has seen repeated drug interceptions in 2025. In May, soldiers at another checkpoint south of the city stopped a trailer and found 400 kilos of meth hidden among canned goods, plus 17 kilos of opium. The pattern is clear: industrial-scale synthetic shipments are moving through the rural skirts of Ensenada.

How big is “big”

Officials and local press list the weight at 3,580 kilos, or a little under four U.S. tons. El Imparcial calls it one of the largest synthetic-drug seizures in Baja California this year. Milenio, summarizing the federal Security Cabinet’s daily brief for August 28, also cites 3,580 kilos hidden in two cargo vehicles in Ensenada.

That same federal brief grouped Ensenada’s bust with coordinated actions in nine states. The push included raids, precursor chemical seizures, and weapons recoveries, underscoring the scale of current federal pressure.

What we still don’t know

Authorities have not announced arrests tied to the vehicles discovered in the brush. FGR has custody of the drugs and units and will now run chain-of-custody, forensics, and routing analysis to see who staged the stash and where it was headed. El Mexicano reports that the cargo is under FGR guard, which aligns with what El Imparcial reported about the handover to federal agents.

Significant Baja seizures rarely stand alone. On August 29, FGR also reported a separate action in the state—searches that uncovered a suspected synthetic-drug lab—part of the same week’s tempo of anti-meth operations. That case reinforces how production and storage nodes coexist across the border region.

The local reality

These rural roads are familiar to residents and to smugglers. Tracks linking Ejido Uruapan and Ejido Zorrillo let off-road vehicles slip between hills before merging back toward Highway 1. When a shipment is this big, abandoning vehicles suggests panic, a spotter’s warning, or a misread of patrol patterns. The presence of a long-standing military checkpoint in the zone, noted by La Jornada, helps explain why traffickers try to cache loads short of the fixed posts and recover them later. Sometimes, they don’t make it back.

What happens next

Expect FGR to open a federal delitos contra la salud case file and to test the purity and crystal structure of the meth. That will help estimate retail value and possible origin. Investigators will also compare container styles, bagging methods, and vehicle provenance with past cases to identify and link networks. For a community that has watched seizures climb all year, confirmation of the route and the players behind it matters as much as the headline number.
