Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, August 7, 2026 – Puerto Vallarta will begin offering free theater and cultural workshops in neighborhoods this weekend, the first part of a five-month citywide program that will also bring mariachi events, Día de Muertos celebrations, and a Christmas festival before the end of the year.
The neighborhood program begins Saturday, August 8, at 5:00 p.m. in the Monte Everest neighborhood. Cultural caravans are then expected to move to a different colonia every 15 days, with free theater performances and workshops geared toward children and young people.
The approach puts some of the city’s cultural programming beyond its usual Centro and Malecón venues. Ricardo Josué Martínez Andrade, director of the Instituto Vallartense de Cultura, said during Friday’s presentation that improving access to cultural activities in neighborhoods is one of the priorities of the new schedule.
Those traveling programs will run alongside free activities already offered at Centro Cultural La Lija, Centro Cultural Pitillal, Centro Cultural Cuale and the library in Mojoneras. Current offerings include clay, printmaking, drawing and painting workshops, along with weekly creative laboratories.
The first major performance on the August calendar is Violincheli Brothers on August 23 at 7:00 p.m. at Hotel Friendly. A separate September project will open a gallery at Hotel Mío, giving Vallarta artists another exhibition space outside the city’s traditional galleries and cultural centers. An exact opening date and the participating artists have not yet been published.
September will also bring mariachi programming and the Fiestas Patrias, including a 7:00 p.m. presentation at the Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe followed by an 8:00 p.m. traditional fandango in Plaza de Armas.
The Fiestas Patrias program is scheduled for September 15, including the traditional Grito and activities in central Puerto Vallarta.
In October, the city is scheduled to host the Concurso Estatal de Mariachi Infantil y Juvenil from October 14 through 17. Plans announced Friday include master classes, an opening gala at Los Arcos del Malecón, semifinal competition and a final.
That will lead almost directly into one of the city’s largest cultural periods of the year. The Festival de Día de Muertos is planned for October 30 through November 4, with officials confirming that the Monumental Catrina will return. Last year’s Día de Muertos program spread activities through Centro and the Zona Romántica, including altars, parades and the large Catrina installation along the Malecón.
December is reserved for the Festival Navideño, although the city has not yet announced its dates, venues or detailed program.
Several of those events were already included in the Instituto Vallartense de Cultura’s annual 2026 calendar, including the Día de Muertos and Christmas festivals. The institute notes on that calendar that changes and updates will be published through its official website.
