Hermosillo police save minor from jumping off bridge after emotional crisis

Hermosillo police save minor from jumping off a bridge early Thursday after an emotional crisis, then secure mental health support and family care—highlighting Sonora’s focus on public safety and suicide prevention.

A team of three Municipal Police officers in Hermosillo prevented a 17-year-old boy from taking his own life early Thursday morning, thanks to quick thinking and calm intervention on Highway 15 at Jaudiel Zamorano Boulevard.

At 3:10 a.m., Officer Aguilar Correa spotted the teenager perched on the edge of the overpass. The boy, distraught over a recent breakup and ongoing family issues, appeared ready to jump. Correa approached on foot and began a gentle conversation to keep the boy engaged and safe.

While Correa spoke, officers Hernández Figueroa and Osuna Cisneros seized a crucial moment of distraction. They moved in silently and guided the teen away from the ledge to safety. The entire rescue unfolded within minutes, underscoring both the officers’ training and their ability to respond under pressure.

Once secured, the minor was taken by patrol unit to the Children’s Hospital for an initial medical evaluation. His mother accompanied him throughout the transfer. Doctor’s reports confirmed no serious physical injuries, though hospital staff urged continued mental health support.

Following the medical check, authorities referred the boy and his family to the Sávalos crisis line and Sonora’s state mental health services. These resources offer counseling, crisis intervention, and follow-up care to address depression and family conflict.

Mayor’s office spokesperson Laura Méndez praised the officers for their rapid action and sensitivity. “Our Municipal Police not only enforce the law but also protect and serve with compassion,” Méndez said. “Preventing suicide is as much a part of public safety as any other police duty.”

The incident adds to a growing effort by Hermosillo officials to expand mental health training for first responders. Since early 2024, the city has held workshops on crisis negotiation, suicide awareness, and trauma-informed care for all Municipal Police units.

Local advocacy groups commend the program. “Early intervention can save lives,” said Elena Ruiz of Sonora’s Mental Health Alliance. “We’re seeing more officers equipped to recognize warning signs and act with empathy.”

According to the state Department of Public Safety, Hermosillo recorded 15 attempted suicides on bridges over the past two years. Police and city engineers have installed warning signs and emergency phones at major overpasses. The goal is to give at-risk individuals an immediate way to reach help.

Family members of the rescued teen asked police to keep their names private but expressed relief and gratitude. “I was terrified when I lost sight of him,” the mother said. “Thanks to those officers, my son is alive and getting help.”

This successful rescue highlights both the human side of law enforcement and the growing focus on mental health in public policy. Hermosillo’s leadership hopes to expand crisis training further and partner with schools, hospitals, and community groups to reach more young people in distress.

As mental health concerns rise across Mexico, Hermosillo’s integrated approach—combining law enforcement vigilance, medical evaluation, and ongoing counseling—could serve as a model for other cities aiming to prevent suicide and promote well-being.
