Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Sept. 23, 2026 — Mexico’s hotel association reports advance winter bookings in Puerto Vallarta and other beach destinations as the city’s measured hotel occupancy trails last year.
Association president Miguel Ángel Fong González said in a Sept. 22 interview that he hoped beach destinations would reach about 80% occupancy during the winter holidays. His estimate covers beach destinations collectively; it is not a Puerto Vallarta booking figure.
“We hope for a very good finish,” Fong said in Spanish. He named Puerto Vallarta, Acapulco, Cancún and Los Cabos among destinations receiving advance reservations.
Local jobs and businesses
The outlook has practical stakes for hotel workers, restaurants and other businesses that depend on visitors. Puerto Vallarta’s hotel directory lists properties along Boulevard Francisco Medina Ascencio and Avenida Paseo de la Marina.
In August, local hotel association president Abel Villa Sánchez urged hotels to retain employees through the slower fall months. He put summer occupancy near 70%, below the previous year.
Puerto Vallarta’s Coparmex business group reported temporary breaks of up to a week at some member hotels. Its president also reported temporary restaurant closures and said the group had found no mass layoffs.
The gap in measured demand
Our review of federal DataTur figures found Puerto Vallarta’s hotel occupancy averaged 65.2% from January through July, compared with 74.1% a year earlier. That is a decline of 8.9 percentage points. Our earlier report on July occupancy covered the downturn.
The airport’s August passenger figures show traffic fell 10.3% from August 2025. International traffic fell 26.3%.
Villa described winter as a chance to regain earlier demand. “I would expect that this winter we can again have demand levels similar to previous years,” he said in an August interview, translated from Spanish.
