Nuevo Nayarit, Nayarit, July 11, 2026 — Nuevo Nayarit placed sixth among Mexico’s most popular destinations in Tripadvisor’s 2026 Travelers’ Choice Best of the Best awards, finishing behind Cabo San Lucas, Cancún, Mexico City, Puerto Vallarta and Tulum.
The placement is confirmed on Tripadvisor’s official Mexico destination ranking, which puts Nuevo Nayarit ahead of Cozumel, Bacalar, San Miguel de Allende and Teotihuacán. The list places Bahía de Banderas among the first six destinations, with Puerto Vallarta in fourth place across the state line.
Tripadvisor does not present the award as an expert inspection or a measure of current booking volume. Its awards policy says Best of the Best rankings weigh the quality and quantity of reviews and ratings submitted during a 12-month period. Eligible destinations must have been listed for at least 12 months, receive a minimum volume of reviews, and maintain a required rating. Tripadvisor says fewer than 1% of its 8 million profiles receive the distinction.
That makes the ranking a verified measure of strong traveler feedback, but not proof that the announcement has produced new hotel reservations, restaurant sales or tour bookings. Neither Tripadvisor nor the Nayarit government released a conversion estimate showing how many trips were generated by the award.
The strongest available demand figures indicate a destination that remains busy but is running below last year’s pace. Federal Tourism Secretariat data placed Nuevo Nayarit second nationwide in hotel occupancy during the first quarter of 2026 at 81.6 percent. The same destination recorded 84.5 percent during the first three months of 2025, a decline of 2.9 percentage points. January through February showed a similar pattern, with occupancy at 83 percent in 2026 compared with 86.3 percent a year earlier.
Those numbers do not diminish the ranking, but they complicate the promotional claim that recognition is already translating into additional demand. Nuevo Nayarit retained one of Mexico’s highest occupancy levels even as its year-over-year rate slipped. Public reports reviewed by PVDN do not provide average daily room rates, advance reservations, local sales tax collections, or business surveys specifically linked to the Tripadvisor announcement.
Air traffic adds another caution. Puerto Vallarta International Airport is the main air gateway serving Nuevo Nayarit and the southern Riviera Nayarit. The airport lost nearly 484,000 passengers during the first half of 2026, while June traffic fell 18.7 percent from a year earlier. International traffic dropped 33.4 percent during the month. Airport totals cover the entire bay and do not isolate Nuevo Nayarit, but they do not support a claim of broad regional growth in travel during the period.
Nayarit Gov. Miguel Ángel Navarro described the recognition as a reflection of the state’s natural attractions, gastronomy, traditions, and tourism. His statement did not include booking, revenue or employment figures tied to the award.
The ranking still has practical marketing value. A sixth-place position can improve visibility on a major travel platform and give hotels, restaurants and activity operators another credential to use in sales material. It also strengthens recognition of the Nuevo Nayarit name, adopted officially in 2022 after decades under the name Nuevo Vallarta.
The economic test will arrive in later occupancy reports, summer room rates, and business sales. Until those figures are released, the sixth-place ranking is confirmed, while its effect on local demand remains unmeasured.
