Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, August 3, 2026 – Municipal tourism projections put the city’s July hotel occupancy between 65% and 68%, as a late-month increase in domestic travel strengthened a summer season that opened below expectations.
The estimate came from figures shared by Puerto Vallarta’s municipal tourism authorities. The range represents an estimate rather than a final monthly result from the federal hotel-monitoring system.
The result marks a stronger close than the beginning of the summer period. Earlier PVDN reporting placed hotel occupancy near 55% during the opening stretch of the vacation season, when tourism operators were waiting for domestic travelers to arrive later in July.
That pattern was also reflected in comments from Alejandra Cornejo, the municipal tourism director. On July 22, she said national travelers often make reservations close to their travel dates, particularly around weekends and school holidays.
August could extend that late-season momentum. Students in public and incorporated private schools are scheduled to return to their classrooms on Monday, August 31, according to the official SEP calendar. Municipal tourism officials expect the strongest activity during the first weeks of August and on weekends before the holiday period ends.
The domestic market’s contribution is significant because international air traffic has been weaker this year. PVDN reported in July that Puerto Vallarta International Airport traffic fell 12.7% during the first half of 2026, with international passengers accounting for most of the decline. The July occupancy estimate suggests domestic travel helped offset part of that pressure during the school break.
The federal Tourism Ministry had projected average hotel occupancy of 64.4% in Puerto Vallarta during the broader summer period running from July 20 through August 30. The municipal July estimate is higher, although the two figures cover different time periods and should not be treated as a direct year-over-year comparison.
Hotel occupancy remains only one measure of the local tourism economy. It does not show how long guests stayed, how much they spent, or how many visitors used short-term rentals, stayed with family, or arrived for the day. As PVDN previously explained, the final economic impact will depend as much on spending across restaurants, transportation, tours, retail businesses, and other services as on occupied rooms.
The next measure will be whether demand remains steady after the final August holiday weekends. The federal DataTur hotel-monitoring system will provide a more comparable monthly result once the reporting cycle is complete.
