Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, June 19, 2026 – A stationary LP gas tank caught fire Thursday at Hotel Krystal in Puerto Vallarta’s Hotel Zone, drawing Civil Protection and firefighters to the Las Glorias corridor.
Emergency crews found a 1,000-liter tank in a green area on the platform that supplies gas to villas inside the hotel complex. By the time firefighters reached the site, most of the fuel involved had already burned off, leaving about 10 percent of the tank’s capacity, based on details first reported by NoticiasPV.
No injuries, evacuations, or additional damage were reported. Firefighters cooled the area and cleared remaining risks before the hotel returned to normal activity. The cause of the fire was not immediately made public.
Emergency response in a busy hotel corridor
Hotel Krystal sits on Avenida Francisco Medina Ascencio in Zona Hotelera Norte, one of the city’s busiest tourism corridors. That matters because even a contained fire inside a resort can quickly affect guests, workers, traffic, taxis, bus service, and nearby businesses if evacuations or street closures become necessary.
In this case, the incident stayed inside the property. The internal brigade was activated, municipal emergency crews responded, and firefighters kept the situation from spreading beyond the tank area.
Why a tank fire gets treated seriously
A gas-tank fire can appear limited and still require a full emergency response. LP gas is stored under pressure, and civil-protection guidance warns that it can collect in low areas during a leak because it is heavier than air.
The same safety guidance says tanks should be kept outdoors, on firm surfaces, away from ignition sources, and with gas lines properly supported and marked.
Mexico’s current LP gas installation standard, NOM-004-SEDG-2004, covers the design and construction of gas-use installations. The standard remains listed as active in the federal catalog of Mexican norms.
For hotels, condo buildings, restaurants, and rental properties, the practical question after an incident like this is not only whether the flames were controlled. It is whether the system was inspected, documented, and maintained before the next refill.
What property managers should check
Firefighters left recommendations for periodic inspection and maintenance of the hotel’s gas installations.
Civil-protection guidance says stationary tanks should not be filled beyond 80 percent. It also recommends replacing valves every five years and having older tanks reviewed by a verification unit once they reach 10 years of age.
Routine maintenance is easy to overlook in buildings where tanks are out of sight, behind service areas, or on platforms used only by staff. Thursday’s response at Krystal shows why those systems need to be treated as part of guest safety, not just building maintenance.
A reminder not just for hotels
Gas incidents are not limited to large resorts. PVDN previously reported a gas-tank explosion tied to an apartment fire in Emiliano Zapata, where firefighters also had to respond inside a dense neighborhood setting.
If there is a strong gas smell, a visible flame near a tank, or a suspected leak, leave the area if it is safe, avoid switching lights or electrical devices on or off, and call 911. Civil-protection guidance also warns people not to return to a burned area until authorities say it is safe.
