Hundreds of Tourists Evacuated in Puerto Vallarta After 6.1 Magnitude Earthquake Near Michoacán

Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco – Hundreds of tourists in Puerto Vallarta’s hotel zone were evacuated early Sunday morning following a 6.1 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Michoacán.

The earthquake struck at 2:32 a.m. Central Mexico time, with its epicenter located 47 kilometers southwest of Coalcomán, Michoacán, according to the National Seismological Service (SSN). The tremor was strongly felt along Mexico’s Pacific coastline, prompting immediate evacuations in several areas as a precautionary measure.

Local authorities in Puerto Vallarta confirmed that hotel guests and residents were evacuated from high-rise buildings in the city’s hotel zone to designated safe areas. Emergency services conducted rapid inspections to assess the impact of the earthquake. By early morning, officials reported no injuries or structural damage.

“We prioritized safety by evacuating as a precautionary step,” said a spokesperson for Puerto Vallarta’s Civil Protection and Fire Department. “Fortunately, no significant incidents or injuries were reported during the process.”

Aftershocks were recorded in the hours following the initial quake. By 5 a.m., the SSN had registered 163 aftershocks, the strongest of which measured 4.3 magnitude.

Puerto Vallarta, a popular tourist destination, has experienced earthquakes in the past due to its proximity to seismic zones along the Pacific Ring of Fire. Local authorities have long-standing protocols in place for such events, including evacuation drills and safety measures to protect both residents and visitors.

Tourists who experienced the evacuation praised the efficiency and organization of hotel staff and emergency personnel. “It was scary at first, but they got everyone out quickly and kept us informed,” said Emily Parker, a visitor from Canada staying in one of the evacuated hotels.

While there was no structural damage reported in Puerto Vallarta, authorities continue to monitor the situation closely. Residents and tourists are reminded to stay informed about seismic activity and follow safety recommendations from official sources.

The earthquake serves as a reminder of the region’s vulnerability to seismic activity and the importance of preparedness in coastal areas.
