Mejora Coahuila brought free veterinary care directly into La Fragua this week, offering dog and cat owners a chance to Improve Your Pets Health at no charge. Hundreds of animals received tick baths, deworming treatments and rabies vaccinations during the “Improve Your Pets’ Health” brigade.
Since the program began, Mejora Coahuila has held 27 brigades across the state. By mid-2025, the effort reached more than 4,840 dogs and cats. Gabriel Elizondo Pérez, program coordinator, said the goal is to take basic pet care into neighborhoods. “Our pets join us at home and at work. Keeping them healthy keeps our families safe,” he said.
The La Fragua event ran in partnership with the Ministry of the Environment, the Ministry of Health and the Saltillo municipal government. Under Governor Manolo Jiménez Salinas, the state pushes to widen access to free veterinary services. Many routine treatments can cost between 500 and 750 pesos per visit. Credit for free care helps families manage expenses.
Local leaders joined the brigade. They included María Del Mar Treviño Garza from the State Congress, María Del Mar Arroyo Peart representing Mayor Javier Díaz González, Eduardo Medrano Aguirre, Third Councilor of Saltillo, and Ernesto Siller Torres, Saltillo’s Director of Social Development. Their presence underlines how animal health ties into community wellbeing.
Residents praised the event’s timing and quality. One dog owner said she saved money she would have spent at a private clinic. A cat owner added that free rabies shots eased her concern for pet safety. Mobile brigades remove travel barriers, especially for elderly owners or families without transport.
Brigades roll out twice weekly in Saltillo on Tuesdays and Thursdays. After completing the neighborhood schedule, teams will set up in other regions of Coahuila. Pet owners can check the official Mejora Coahuila social media channels or the Saltillo municipal website for upcoming dates and locations. No advance registration is needed.
Veterinary volunteers stress the public health impact. Dr. Ana López noted that regular rabies vaccinations prevent outbreaks. Deworming stops parasites from affecting both animals and people. Tick baths reduce risks of tick-borne illness. “Reaching pets at home cuts gaps in care,” she said.
Mejora Coahuila views these brigades as a first step toward permanent low-cost clinics. In the meantime, free neighborhood events ensure every pet gets basic care. Organizers plan to expand services as demand grows.
