PUERTO VALLARTA (PVDN) – The Jalisco Health Secretariat confirmed two new cases of dengue in the popular tourist destination of Puerto Vallarta on Wednesday, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the region to eight this year.
Jaime Álvarez Zayas, head of the Eighth Sanitary Region based in Puerto Vallarta, disclosed that so far this year, “we have had two confirmed cases in Puerto Vallarta, which are in addition to another confirmed case in the Tomatlán municipality.”
The additional cases in Puerto Vallarta are in Marina Vallarta and Ixtapa, respectively, according to Dr. Álvarez Zayas. Fortunately, these cases involved mild dengue, and the patients did not require intensive therapy. Both patients, who are young, have already recovered due to the timely medical attention they received.
Immediate measures were implemented in the affected areas to prevent further contagion. Given that the Aedes Aegypti mosquito – the primary vector of the dengue virus – typically resides in and around homes, residents are urged to remember and apply preventative measures.
“It is a house mosquito; it does not travel more than 100 meters from where it is born,” Dr. Álvarez Zayas explained. “To break the chain of transmission, you must wash and cover containers in which water is stored, turn over containers that can accumulate water, and throw away any potential breeding pots and pans found at home. These measures are very effective in preventing breeding sites within the home. Obviously, without breeding sites, the chance of being bitten is less and if the mosquito doesn’t bite you, then you won’t get dengue.”
As of now, a total of eight cases of dengue have been registered in five municipalities of Jalisco this year: three in Cihuatlán, two in Puerto Vallarta, one in Amatitán, one in Tomatlán, and one in Tala. The Jalisco Health Secretariat continues to closely monitor the situation and encourages the public to adhere to preventive measures against dengue.
