Jalisco Deploys Nearly 200 Officers Ahead of Simón

Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Oct. 8, 2026 — Jalisco deployed nearly 200 civil protection officers Thursday to its northern and southern coasts as Tropical Storm Simón approached western Mexico.

The operation began at 7 a.m., with personnel mobilized from Guadalajara and other regional commands. According to the state’s deployment details, teams will focus on preventing emergencies, reducing risks and assisting vulnerable communities.

The mobilization comes as Mexico issued a hurricane watch from Manzanillo to Punta Mita, including Puerto Vallarta. The National Hurricane Center confirmed the expanded watch in its Thursday morning advisory.

Emergency Teams Positioned Along Jalisco’s Coast

The Jalisco State Civil Protection and Firefighters Unit established an emergency response structure covering both coastal regions.

Five command posts have been designated in Cabo Corrientes, Tomatlán, Talpa de Allende, La Huerta and El Grullo. These locations will monitor conditions and coordinate emergency personnel as the storm develops.

For Puerto Vallarta residents, the deployment places additional state personnel in neighboring municipalities, including Cabo Corrientes, immediately south of the city, and Tomatlán farther down the coast.

The operation covers both coastal regions, not Puerto Vallarta alone.

The state also activated an Emergency Operations Center in Guadalajara and two regional area commands, one overseeing the northern coast and another responsible for the south.

“We reactivated the same coordination platform,” the state civil protection agency said, referring to the emergency structure connecting regional commands and field operations.

Officials said the response involves coordination among municipal, state and federal agencies. Personnel will conduct preventive operations and assist families in communities considered vulnerable to storm conditions.

Puerto Vallarta’s Existing Emergency Resources

Puerto Vallarta also has an established regional civil protection command.

We checked the state’s official regional office directory, which lists the Puerto Vallarta command at Dr. Vicente Penney y Vital and Andador Norte Río Pitillal.

That permanent regional office is separate from the five command posts designated for the new deployment.

The expanded operation allows state teams to coordinate across several municipalities while working alongside local emergency services.

This coordination is particularly relevant as the region prepares for potential flooding, dangerous surf and other conditions associated with Simón.

Hurricane Watch Extends Across Puerto Vallarta

According to the National Hurricane Center’s 9 a.m. advisory, Tropical Storm Simón had sustained winds of 65 mph (100 km/h).

The storm was approximately 380 miles (610 kilometers) south-southeast of Cabo Corrientes, moving west at 5 mph (7 km/h).

Forecasters expect Simón to turn northward Friday and approach Mexico’s western coastline late Saturday. The center forecasts rapid strengthening, potentially reaching Category 4 hurricane intensity before landfall.

A hurricane watch means hurricane conditions are possible within the designated coastal area. It does not mean those conditions are already occurring.

The National Hurricane Center said tropical storm conditions could begin affecting the hurricane watch area Saturday, with hurricane conditions possible Saturday night.

Rainfall is another concern.

Forecasters expect 8 to 15 inches of rain across portions of southwestern Mexico through Sunday. Isolated totals could reach 15 to 25 inches in parts of Jalisco, Colima and Michoacán.

These are regional rainfall projections, not estimates specifically for Puerto Vallarta.

Heavy rainfall could cause flooding and landslides, particularly in mountainous areas. Large waves and dangerous rip currents are also expected along portions of the Pacific coast.

Additional information about the storm’s potential local effects is available in PVDN’s coverage of Puerto Vallarta’s hurricane watch.

Coastal Residents Urged to Follow Emergency Advisories

Jalisco’s civil protection agency urged residents in coastal communities to monitor official weather updates and follow local authorities’ instructions.

Emergency teams will remain coordinated across the northern and southern coastal regions as officials track Simón’s development.

Residents can obtain local emergency information through Puerto Vallarta’s Municipal Civil Protection and Fire Department.

The municipal department lists 911 as the emergency number for residents requiring assistance.
