Seattle, WA — On Wednesday, February 5, a Japan Airlines aircraft collided with a stationary Delta Air Lines plane while taxiing at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.
The incident occurred around 10:17 a.m. Pacific time on a taxi lane between the S Concourse and the airport’s south maintenance hangars. A Japan Airlines Boeing 787, preparing for its next flight, struck the tail section of a parked Delta Air Lines Boeing 737. The Delta aircraft, operating as flight 1921 with a scheduled route to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, was undergoing de-icing procedures at the time of the collision.
Emergency response teams, including multiple airport and fire departments, arrived promptly at the scene. No injuries were reported among the Delta aircraft’s 142 passengers or its crew members.
Passengers were safely deplaned following the collision, with operations on the ramp and taxiway remaining unaffected. Delta Air Lines quickly rescheduled the departure for 3 p.m. Pacific time.
Airport authorities have confirmed that a thorough investigation into the cause of the incident is underway, with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) expected to participate.
Delta Air Lines released a statement expressing gratitude for the swift response of emergency teams and the cooperation of passengers. “The safety and well-being of our customers and crew remain our highest priority,” the airline stated.
Japan Airlines officials also pledged full cooperation with the investigation, adding, “We deeply regret this incident and will work diligently to understand what occurred to prevent a recurrence.”
Seattle-Tacoma International Airport remains operational despite the incident, and flights are continuing as scheduled. Authorities have assured passengers that safety protocols are being reviewed and enhanced as a precaution.
