Cancun, Mexico – A widespread power outage has left thousands in southeastern Mexico without electricity since Monday afternoon, causing significant disruptions to daily life, traffic, and business operations. Residents from the states of Quintana Roo and Tabasco, as well as parts of Campeche and Yucatán, reported losing power and turning to social media to express their frustrations.
Officials from the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) attributed the blackout to issues with the natural gas supply. In a statement, the CFE explained that “poor natural gas quality was experienced due to high humidity levels in the Mayakán gas pipeline.” This deterioration in fuel quality was linked to a failure at the Nuevo Pemex cogeneration plant, which severely limited the facility’s ability to generate electricity with natural gas.
To mitigate the impact on consumers, the Generation Subdirectorate, in coordination with CFEnergía and the National Energy Control Center (Cenace), implemented a series of scheduled rotating outages. This measure was designed to reduce the inconvenience for users during the period of irregular power supply.
This incident adds to a series of challenges the region has faced in recent years. Similar blackouts were reported in 2023 and 2024 during a severe heat wave, when the National Electric System struggled with increased energy demand amid underinvestment in transmission and distribution infrastructure.
As authorities work to resolve the current outage and stabilize the natural gas supply, residents across the affected states remain hopeful that normalcy will return swiftly. Local officials have urged the public to stay updated through official channels as the situation continues to evolve.
