Mérida’s latest Cabildo session brought several public projects under one vote, from rehabilitation pools at La Ceiba to new coworking spaces in fast-growing neighborhoods. The approvals also touch culture, public spaces, and access to technology. For residents, the measures show how City Hall is trying to place more services in neighborhood settings, rather than keeping them concentrated in the city center.
Mérida council approves inclusion, mental-health, and cultural projects
Mérida’s Cabildo approved several measures tied to social infrastructure, inclusion, mental health, and culture, including work at the Centro Recreativo La Ceiba and new coworking areas in Ciudad Caucel and Las Américas.
The La Ceiba work focuses on rehabilitation pools used in services for people with disabilities. City officials said the project fits into a broader accessibility effort that also includes ramps in public parks and the planned first municipal autism center.
The approvals were made during an ordinary Cabildo session. Mayor Cecilia Patrón Laviada framed the measures as part of the city’s work to expand access to public services for residents in different parts of Mérida.
Coworking spaces planned for Ciudad Caucel and Las Américas
The council also approved new public coworking spaces for Ciudad Caucel and the Las Américas area. These spaces are intended for students, remote workers, and residents who need a place to study or work outside the home.
Officials said the idea is to combine public space with basic access to technology. The coworking areas are expected to include work tables, seating, electrical outlets, and internet access.
The city linked the project to mental-health support, especially for young people. The spaces are being presented as an alternative to working or studying in isolation, while also bringing access to technology closer to residential areas.
For expats and long-term residents, the coworking element is also worth noting because Mérida continues to attract remote workers, retirees, and families. Public workspaces can become part of how growing neighborhoods manage daily life as the city expands.
Public-space recovery and cultural publishing also approved
The Cabildo also backed a collaboration agreement with Fundación Placemaking México. The goal is to support the recovery and activation of public spaces in the municipality.
In the cultural area, council members approved collaboration models for the Fondo Municipal para Creadores con Trayectoria and the Fondo Municipal para Jóvenes Creadores. These programs are tied to support for local artists and writers.
The council also approved the co-publication of eight books selected through the Fondo Editorial 2025 and the Premio Internacional de Poesía Ciudad de Mérida 2025.
Together, the measures place disability access, youth services, neighborhood infrastructure, and cultural production inside the same municipal agenda. The next point for residents to watch will be how quickly the approved projects move from council approval to visible work in the neighborhoods named.
