Mexican Peso Steady Near 17.13 Against U.S. Dollar

Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, August 11, 2026 – The Mexican peso was trading at 17.1262 per U.S. dollar at 6:19 a.m. Mexico City time Tuesday, according to Tullett Prebon market data.

USD/MXN was down 0.09% from Monday’s close of 17.1412. A lower reading means the peso has strengthened against the dollar. The pair opened at 17.1410 and traded between 17.1158 and 17.1625 during the early session.

The movement was limited to about 1.5 centavos per dollar. Currency quotes can change throughout the day, particularly with U.S. inflation data due Wednesday and oil markets reacting to developments in the Middle East.

Banxico keeps a rate cushion under the peso

Mexico’s central bank provided some support for the peso last week by keeping the benchmark interest rate at 6.50%. The August 6 decision was unanimous, and the bank said it considered the current rate appropriate for the economic and inflation outlook.

The U.S. Federal Reserve’s target range remains at 3.50% to 3.75%. Mexico’s higher rate can support demand for peso-denominated assets, although interest-rate differentials are only one factor influencing the currency.

Mexico’s latest inflation figures also gave traders new information to weigh. INEGI reported annual inflation of 3.12% in July, down from 3.37% in June and the lowest level in more than six years.

Core inflation remained elevated at 3.95%, helping explain Banxico’s cautious stance. The central bank now expects headline inflation to return to its 3% target in the final quarter of 2027, later than it previously projected.

U.S. inflation and oil keep traders cautious

The U.S. dollar index was broadly steady near 99.82 Tuesday morning as currency markets waited for the next inflation report. The July Consumer Price Index is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Eastern time Wednesday, or 6:30 a.m. in Puerto Vallarta and Mexico City.

Expectations for another Federal Reserve rate increase weakened after Friday’s disappointing U.S. employment report. By Monday, futures markets were assigning a 52% probability to a September increase, down from 67% one week earlier.

Oil was moving in the opposite direction. Brent crude reached $90.03 per barrel before easing to $87.51 as traders followed negotiations over shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Continuing disruptions to energy flows have kept inflation and global risk concerns in the market.

Higher oil prices do not produce a consistent, one-direction move in the peso. Mexico is an oil producer, but rising energy costs can also increase inflation concerns and reduce demand for currencies considered more sensitive to global risk. Tuesday’s narrow USD/MXN range suggested neither influence was dominating early trading.

Budgeting around a 17-peso dollar

At the 6:19 a.m. market rate, $1,000 was worth approximately 17,126 pesos before fees. At Monday’s close, the same amount was worth about 17,141 pesos, a difference of roughly 15 pesos.

For people earning dollars and paying expenses in pesos, Tuesday morning’s modest peso gain slightly reduced the amount received from a dollar conversion. People earning pesos while paying dollar-denominated bills faced a correspondingly smaller cost.

The quoted rate is an interbank market reference. Banks, ATMs, credit cards and cash-exchange businesses apply their own spreads and fees, which will usually have a greater effect on a household conversion than Tuesday morning’s 0.09% market movement.
