Hyundai didn’t shrink output in Mexico. It moved it. Plant leaders in Nuevo León say Hyundai Mexico Tucson shipments that once fed US dealers are now headed to Canada. The pivot landed after a new round of US auto tariffs, while Canada slapped its own taxes on US-built vehicles. Alabama’s factory will shoulder more of America’s demand. The numbers show a clean break in August, and they hint at how fast automakers can reroute supply when policy flips. What does that mean for buyers on both sides of the border?
Hyundai’s compact SUV is still rolling off the line in Pesquería, Nuevo León. What changed is the destination. A senior manager at the plant says Tucson exports that once went to the United States are now going to Canada. The switch followed the latest US auto tariffs, with the Alabama plant backfilling American demand.
The plant’s own ledger tells the story. From January through August 2025, it exported 11,263 Tucsons. Roughly half went to the US and half to Canada—until August. That month, US-bound shipments stopped entirely, and 2,406 units went to Canada, reflecting the tariff-driven pivot.
Hyundai Mexico Tucson and the new tariff math
Why Canada? Ottawa imposed a 25% retaliatory tariff on many US-made vehicles starting April 9, 2025, while exempting Mexican content under the USMCA framework. Sending Mexican-built Tucsons north avoids that price penalty for Canadian buyers. Meanwhile, Washington’s 25% tariff on imported finished vehicles, effective April 3, jolted automakers to localize models for the US or reroute supply chains. Hyundai responded by shifting some Tucson output for the US market to its Alabama factory this spring.
The Nuevo León operation remains a flex plant for the group. Much of its capacity stays focused on Kia sedans (K3 and K4), with Tucson assembled there to support North American peaks. Industry trackers also note Tucson’s Mexico runs occur at Kia’s Pesquería facility, underscoring Hyundai-Kia’s shared footprint and ability to shuffle volumes across the region.
Back in April, Hyundai publicly set up a tariff task force and confirmed that a slice of Tucson production for the US would move to Alabama. Today, the company is still fine-tuning that mix. Reuters reports Hyundai is ramping up US output in the long term, even trimming near-term profit targets as tariffs bite. All of this helps explain why Mexico-built Tucsons that used to cross into Texas now ride rails to Ontario and Quebec.
What this means for shoppers in Canada and the US
Canadian buyers should see steadier Tucson availability sourced from Mexico, rather than Alabama. Earlier this year, Hyundai’s Canadian arm signaled that gasoline Tucson models for that market would be sourced from Mexico to lessen tariff exposure. In the US, expect Alabama to keep supplying most Tucsons—part of a broader plan to cushion sticker shock by building more cars stateside.
The Mexico plant isn’t abandoning other markets. Executives say exports remain stable overall; it’s the destinations that moved. And a quirk of Hyundai’s global logistics persists: the Tucson sold in Mexico is imported from the Czech Republic, while Nuevo León’s Tucsons go abroad. It’s an odd split for a familiar badge, and it shows how quickly policy can redraw supply lines without shutting plants.
