Your dollars changed value after Mexico’s peso slipped

The peso did not break sharply, but Thursday’s dollar snapshot still carried a warning. The headline rate moved to 17.40 pesos after Banxico trimmed its 2026 growth outlook and pointed to a weaker first quarter. At bank windows, the numbers were less neat. Some institutions were buying dollars near 16.15 and selling near 17.90, leaving a gap that can affect rent payments, card decisions, cash exchanges, transfers, and daily budgeting choices.

Peso loses ground after growth warning

The U.S. dollar averaged 17.40 pesos in Mexico on Thursday, May 28, after the Mexican peso weakened in the prior session. The peso fell 0.44 percent on Wednesday and closed near 17.39 pesos per dollar, according to the exchange-rate snapshot published early Thursday.

The pressure followed Banxico’s latest growth outlook, which cut the 2026 forecast to 1.1 percent from 1.6 percent. The central bank linked the revision to first-quarter economic activity that was “considerably weaker than expected.” It also said investment would show weak performance at least until the second half of 2026, reflecting uncertainty around the U.S. trade relationship and the next T-MEC review.

Banxico Governor Victoria Rodríguez said the bank still expects activity to “return to a path of growth” beginning in the second quarter. That keeps the peso story from being a straight sell-off. It also puts more weight on incoming data, especially consumption, exports, investment, and U.S. demand.

Official rates and bank windows diverge

The FIX rate for Thursday was 17.3793 pesos per dollar, according to federal indicators. Banxico’s rate for obligations denominated in U.S. dollars stood at 17.3232 pesos per dollar for May 28. Banxico says the FIX is determined from wholesale currency-market quotes on bank business days and is published before it appears in the Diario Oficial.

Bank window quotes showed a wider spread. Afirme listed dollar buying at 16.40 and selling at 17.90. Banco Azteca showed 16.65 and 17.89. BBVA listed 16.46 and 17.59, while Banorte showed 16.15 and 17.70. Banamex listed 16.82 and 17.78, and Scotiabank showed 16.80 and 17.90.

That means the quoted selling price at some banks was more than 50 centavos above the official FIX. The buy side was much lower, with Banorte’s listed purchase rate at 16.15. Bank prices can change during the day, and the rate displayed online may not match the rate offered at a branch window.

The gap is the same issue described in a recent exchange-rate explainer, which showed how official references, bank windows, and remittance platforms can produce different peso-dollar prices.

A modest move with larger signals

The latest move did not push the dollar back toward the 18-peso level seen earlier this year. It did, however, come after several days of pressure tied to Mexico’s economic outlook, interest-rate expectations, and global risk.

Analysts at Monex said the main factor to monitor is the Middle East conflict and whether it filters into core inflation through energy shocks. Banorte analysts said the 6.50 percent reference rate could remain in place through the rest of 2026 and 2027, according to market commentary published after Banxico’s quarterly report.

Banxico’s task now sits between two weak spots. Slower growth can reduce pressure on prices from demand. A weaker peso can raise costs for imported goods and services, depending on how long the move lasts and whether businesses pass the difference to consumers.

For Thursday, the working numbers were clear. The average dollar stood at 17.40 pesos, the official FIX rate was 17.3793, and several bank windows were selling dollars close to 17.90 pesos.
