Mexico Records First Wild-Born Mexican Wolf in Chihuahua

The National Commission of Natural Protected Areas confirms the first wild-born Mexican wolf in Campo Verde, Chihuahua, marking a major advance in the reintroduction program and biodiversity conservation.

Mexico has achieved a conservation milestone with the first recorded birth of a wild-born Mexican wolf (Canis lupus baileyi) in the Campo Verde Flora and Fauna Protection Area, located in northwest Chihuahua, after the species had been extinct in the region for more than 50 years, the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas (Conanp) reported.

Conanp highlighted that the wolf pup was identified near the town of Chihuahua, where bi-national reintroduction efforts have released captive-bred wolves since 2012 under the Mexico-United States program. “This confirms that the specimen is part of the free-living litters recorded in the region since 2014, which represents a major advance in wolf conservation, as we can now talk about the first wild populations in the country in more than five decades,” the agency explained.

Surveillance and Monitoring Committee member Abel Guerrero Tello first spotted the animal while reviewing footage from a camera trap aimed at local waterways. Guerrero initially mistook the young wolf for a “strange coyote” drinking at a watering hole. Upon further review, César Hernández, head of Conanp’s ANP department, confirmed the identity: “It was actually a Mexican wolf, and it was not wearing a satellite GPS collar, which means it was born in the wild.”

Conanp attributes this success to rigorous surveillance, community engagement, and ongoing biological monitoring. Since the 2012 pilot releases in Chihuahua, the agency has collaborated with local ranchers to address predation through measures such as insurance funds for livestock losses, forest fire prevention training, and environmental education programs. These initiatives aim to balance predator recovery with rural livelihoods and foster coexistence.

About the Mexican Wolf
The Mexican wolf is Mexico’s largest wild canid, measuring between 130 cm and 180 cm from snout to tail and weighing an average of 33 kg in adulthood. Distinctive features include a broad head, short thick snout, small wide-set eyes, and erect, rounded ears. Their dense fur ranges from greyish-brown on the back to lighter shades on the belly, with individual color variations spanning white to black.

As a top predator with a complex social structure, Mexican wolves form packs of up to 30 individuals, though typical family groups number three to five. Historically, they hunted native species such as white-tailed and mule deer, pronghorn, collared peccaries, bighorn sheep, and rabbits.

Before extirpation, Mexican wolves ranged across temperate forests and grasslands of Chihuahua, Sonora, Coahuila, Nuevo León, Durango, Zacatecas, Aguascalientes, San Luis Potosí, the Bajío, the central plateau, and even southern Oaxaca, between the Eastern and Western Sierra Madre ranges at elevations above 1,500 meters.

Through conservation actions, the Mexican wolf’s status rose from Extinct in the Wild to Endangered under NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010. Today, the estimated wild population stands at 30 to 35 individuals, marking cautious optimism after decades of recovery efforts.

Conanp remains committed to expanding wild-born litters and strengthening predator-human coexistence across northern Mexico. The confirmation of a wild-born pup in Campo Verde underscores the program’s progress and offers fresh hope for the long-term survival of this iconic species.
