A Navy cleanup at Las Glorias removed plastics, aluminum, glass, and cigarette butts from one of Puerto Vallarta’s urban beaches. The haul was not the largest reported along the bay this year, but it fits a pattern of repeated coastal cleanups tied to Mexico’s national beach conservation campaign. The work also raises the same question facing local authorities and beach users after every cleanup. How much of the waste is being prevented before it reaches the sand?
Navy crews remove waste at Las Glorias
Personnel from Mexico’s Secretary of the Navy removed inorganic waste from Playa Las Glorias in Puerto Vallarta as part of the federal beach and coast conservation campaign.
SEMAR said crews collected about 60 kilograms of plastic containers, 21 kilograms of aluminum, 21 kilograms of glass, and 8 kilograms of plastic bags and cigarette butts. The waste was moved to trash containers for treatment, according to the same notice.
The Navy said personnel from different naval units and facilities joined the work, with support from Armada de México vehicles. The public notice did not specify the number of naval personnel involved.
Campaign reaches several Puerto Vallarta beaches
The cleanup falls under Mexico’s National Campaign for the Cleaning and Conservation of Beaches and Coasts, a 2025–2030 program led by federal agencies to reduce coastal waste.
The campaign’s Puerto Vallarta project page lists Las Glorias among six beaches included at the start of the local effort, along with El Holi, Camarones, Malecón, Olas Altas, and Los Muertos. The same campaign platform shows 3.127 kilometers covered and 806 kilograms of collected waste for the Puerto Vallarta project.
SEMAR’s statement framed the cleanup as part of efforts to protect the marine environment and nautical tourism. The naval command also urged people to place inorganic waste in containers, saying the aim was to “preserve the marine ecosystem” and reduce water contamination.
Repeated cleanups point to steady pressure
The Las Glorias haul is smaller than other recent waste removals reported around Puerto Vallarta, but it follows the same pattern. Earlier coverage noted that the Navy cleaned Playa Los Muertos in May as part of the same national campaign.
Other work has focused away from the central beach strip. A Boca de Tomates cleanup removed 300 kilograms across 1.5 kilometers in April. In February, naval personnel said they removed one ton of plastic, glass, aluminum, and fishing gear from the same beach area.
The latest cleanup did not identify the source of the waste collected at Las Glorias. It also did not include new measures for reducing the flow of bottles, bags, glass, and cigarette debris before they reach the shoreline.
