Cancún, Quintana Roo, June 13, 2026 – Cancún’s municipal government says the new gym at Kuchil Baxal is close to completion after Mayor Ana Paty Peralta inspected the site on June 12.
The city is presenting the space as a training area for high-performance athletes inside one of Cancún’s main public sports complexes. The work includes new equipment, flooring, mirrors, paint, and door replacement, according to the city’s June 12 announcement.
The project affects athletes who train through the Benito Juárez municipal sports system. It may also affect families and sports groups that use Kuchil Baxal, but the city has not said whether the gym will be open to the public, limited to registered athletes, or managed by scheduled team access.
What the city says was installed
According to the municipal notice, crews worked on general painting, new mirrors, self-leveling flooring, and rubber surfaces. The city also reported that the site included treadmills, bikes, functional platforms, and other specialized training equipment.
Peralta said the gym is “almost ready” during the inspection. She was accompanied by Alejandro Luna López, director of the Instituto de la Cultura Física y Deporte de Benito Juárez.
The city has not published an opening date, final cost, capacity, contractor information, funding source, or access rules.
Kuchil Baxal’s place in Cancún sports
Kuchil Baxal is not a new venue. The municipal sports institute lists its base at Av. Yaxchilán s/n, Supermanzana 21, inside the Kuchil Baxaal gym.
In 2024, the city said the complex opened in 1992 and had hosted basketball, volleyball, taekwondo, kickboxing, gymnastics, boxing, fencing, karate, muay thai, CrossFit, and other events.
That same year, Cancún said it spent 7.8 million pesos to renew the building’s central cooling system, including 13 air-conditioning units that had not been replaced in 17 years. The city said the work was expected to benefit about 100,000 athletes and event users over the year.
The gym inspection also fits into a wider municipal push around organized sports. In February, Cancún gathered about 1,800 athletes at Kuchil Baxal before the state phase of the CONADE 2026 process. The city said those athletes represented more than 36 disciplines.
In April, the municipal government presented a multidisciplinary sports team at Kuchil Baxal to support athletes in more than 15 areas, including methodology, sports psychology, physical preparation, nutrition, and physiotherapy.
The Cancún project offers a comparison point for how local governments fund and manage athlete support. PVDN reported this week that Puerto Vallarta gymnasts returned from Guadalajara with 75 medals, a reminder that sports facilities, coaching, and municipal support directly affect local competitors.
