Peso holds near 17.3 per dollar as markets weigh Fed signal

Peso Report: Peso holds near 17.3 per dollar as markets weigh Fed signal

The Mexican peso was trading near 17.32 per U.S. dollar in the latest available early Saturday quote, with a mid-market USD/MXN rate of 17.3186 at 04:23 UTC on June 20, or 10:23 p.m. Friday in Mexico City.

Because the update falls into the weekend window, bank, ATM, and casa de cambio rates in Puerto Vallarta may differ until markets reopen. Retail exchange rates usually include a spread, so the posted rate at a counter or in a banking app will not exactly match the market quote.

The latest completed session left USD/MXN close to 17.33. Market data listed Friday’s rate at 17.3340, down 0.12% from Thursday, after a daily range between 17.2999 and 17.4070. That means the peso strengthened slightly in the session, although the move was modest.

The main outside pressure came from a stronger U.S. dollar after the Federal Reserve held rates steady and policymakers projected a possible hike later this year. The dollar index also moved to its highest level since May 2025 this week as Fed rate expectations shifted higher, according to currency-market reporting.

Mexico’s side of the trade remains anchored by Banco de México. The central bank cut its overnight rate to 6.50% effective May 8 and said it had concluded the easing cycle that began in March 2024. This week, Deputy Governor Gabriel Cuadra argued for keeping the rate on hold, saying the debate should focus on the inflation outlook rather than whether cuts can continue.

Inflation has given the central bank some room, but not a clean all-clear. INEGI reported annual headline inflation at 3.94% in May, back inside Banco de México’s 3% target range plus or minus one percentage point, while core inflation remained higher at 4.19%.

The peso often benefits when Mexican interest rates remain high relative to U.S. rates, but weak domestic growth limits the story. Mexico’s economy contracted 0.6% in the first quarter from the previous quarter, after growth in late 2025.

Trade remains the larger political watch item for Mexico. Canada and Mexico are still pressing the United States for relief from steel and aluminum tariffs as the 2026 USMCA review approaches. Those talks matter to the peso because Mexico’s currency is sensitive to U.S. demand, cross-border manufacturing, and headlines that change expectations for trade flows.

Oil and global risk appetite were mixed heading into the weekend. Brent crude was near $80.57 a barrel on the same market board, while the dollar index was near 100.62. Those numbers did not point to a single driver for the peso, but they reinforced the broader picture: markets are still balancing U.S. rate expectations, energy risk, and Mexican monetary policy.

For Puerto Vallarta residents, frequent visitors, and property owners, the practical budget number this morning is about 17.3 pesos per dollar before bank fees, ATM spreads, or exchange-house margins. A $1,000 USD transfer at the mid-market rate equals roughly 17,300 pesos before costs.

Dollar earners are still receiving fewer pesos than when the exchange rate was closer to 18 or 19, while people spending pesos on dollar expenses are seeing a stronger peso than much of the past decade. For household budgets, the safer approach is to use the mid-market quote as a reference, then compare the actual bank, card, or exchange-counter rate before moving money. Weekend rates can be stale or wider than weekday rates.
