Peso Trades Near 17.22 Per Dollar Today

At 6:30 a.m. Mexico City time on Friday, June 12, the peso was trading near 17.22 per U.S. dollar in live market quotes, with the dollar slightly lower against the Mexican currency.

Investing.com’s USD/MXN screen showed the pair at 17.2263, compared with a previous close of 17.2400, with an early range between 17.1771 and 17.2723. Trading Economics also showed USD/MXN lower on the day, around 17.20 to 17.22, pointing to modest peso strength in the early session.

The market rate is not the same as the official reference rate used for some legal and accounting purposes in Mexico. Banco de México’s exchange-rate table showed 17.3833 pesos per dollar for obligations payable June 12. The central bank publishes the FIX after noon on banking days, so live market quotes can move before the official daily reference is updated.

The peso’s early move came as global markets weighed two forces: a steadier U.S. dollar after Thursday’s decline, and lower oil prices after fresh reports of possible de-escalation in the Gulf conflict.

In currency markets, the dollar index was little changed near 99.68 after falling to its weakest level in a week, as traders waited for confirmation of a possible U.S.-Iran agreement that could reopen the Strait of Hormuz to shipping, according to Reuters market reporting. The same report noted that U.S. producer prices rose more than expected in May, keeping attention on next week’s Federal Reserve meeting.

For Mexico, the domestic backdrop remains centered on inflation and interest rates. INEGI reported that annual inflation slowed to 3.94 percent in May, bringing headline inflation back inside Banco de México’s 3 percent target range, plus or minus one percentage point. Core inflation remained higher, at 4.19 percent, which is one reason markets are still watching Banxico’s next moves closely.

Banxico cut its benchmark rate to 6.50 percent in May and said the move ended its easing cycle, according to Reuters coverage of the central bank decision. That relatively high Mexican rate, compared with U.S. rates, remains one source of support for the peso, although it does not shield the currency from global risk swings.

U.S. rate expectations are also important for the peso. A Reuters poll found that most economists expected the Federal Reserve to keep its key rate in the 3.50 percent to 3.75 percent range for the rest of 2026, while futures markets have priced in the possibility of at least one rate increase by year-end. Higher U.S. rates can support the dollar, while a stable or softer dollar often gives emerging-market currencies, including the peso, more room to strengthen.

Oil added another moving piece on Friday. Reuters reported that Brent crude fell more than 3 percent to about $87.25 a barrel after U.S. President Donald Trump canceled threatened strikes on Iran. Lower oil prices can ease some global inflation concerns, but markets remain cautious because shipping through the Strait of Hormuz is still being monitored.

For Puerto Vallarta readers earning in dollars and spending in pesos, a stronger peso means each dollar converts into fewer pesos than it did at weaker peso levels. At 17.22, $1,000 converts to about 17,220 pesos before bank, ATM, card, or remittance spreads. At the official 17.3833 reference rate, the same $1,000 would equal about 17,383 pesos.

The difference matters for rents, condo fees, medical payments, household budgets, and travel spending. Exchange houses, banks, credit cards, and money-transfer services usually apply their own rates and fees, so the posted market quote should be treated as a reference point, not the exact rate a customer will receive.

The peso was firmer early Friday, but the session remained exposed to U.S. inflation expectations, Fed commentary, oil headlines, and any confirmation or failure of the reported Gulf de-escalation talks.
