Puerto Vallarta announces fines for businesses that dispose of trash outside designated times

Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco – In an effort to maintain cleanliness and preserve the city’s image, Juan Pablo Martínez Torres, Manager of the City and Historic Center of Puerto Vallarta, announced that establishments failing to adhere to the city’s garbage disposal schedule will soon face warnings and potential fines. The announcement was made during a meeting called by Canirac Vallarta, attended by local business owners from various sectors.

Martínez Torres highlighted that while agreements had been reached with private sector representatives to respect collection hours in the Center and Romantic Zone, compliance has waned over time. After a month-long campaign to educate businesses on proper disposal times, municipal authorities will begin issuing official warnings starting next Monday. Repeat offenders who ignore these warnings will be subject to fines in accordance with the Municipal Revenue Law.

“We have been in the process of disseminating information about the collection schedules for a month and starting next Monday, the warnings will begin by the Inspection and Surveillance staff, and once a business has received a warning and is a repeat offender, the next step is a fine; it is important that we take responsibility and raise awareness because at the end of the day, the image belongs to everyone,”

Local restaurateurs present at the meeting welcomed the decision, agreeing that economic penalties are an effective way to encourage compliance. “Unfortunately, until it costs them, they decide to do things,” one attendee observed.

In addition to the new enforcement measures, Martínez Torres confirmed that the first 45-day cycle of street washing and cleaning in the downtown area is nearing completion. This initiative is part of an ongoing project to revitalize the Historic Center, which includes façade improvements, Malecón maintenance, and corner cleanups.

City officials urge all businesses and residents to follow the designated waste disposal schedule to ensure a cleaner, more welcoming environment for locals and tourists alike. Further details on the precise amount of the fines are expected to be released in the coming weeks.
