Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, August 3, 2026 – Puerto Vallarta’s new electric bus system begins regular paid service Monday after a free opening weekend, with an integrated fare of 11 pesos.
Nineteen electric buses began operating Saturday along the Francisco Medina Ascencio corridor. The system is operated by SITEUR and represents the agency’s first public transportation operation outside the Guadalajara metropolitan area, according to the Jalisco government’s launch announcement.
Service will operate daily from 5:00 a.m. until 11:30 p.m. The state says the system is expected to serve more than 9,000 passengers each day, with buses arriving at intervals of approximately 5 to 14 minutes.
The two main routes connect the city’s northern and southern corridors. The announced routes are Ruta Troncal 2 between Ixtapa and downtown Puerto Vallarta, and Ruta Troncal 3 between Las Juntas and Galerías Vallarta. The network also serves Marina Vallarta, the hotel zone, the Centro Universitario de la Costa and other major stops along the boulevard. Route details published after the launch identify the two corridors and their expected operating intervals.
Passengers must use either a Mi Movilidad card or a Tarjeta Única to pay the 11-peso fare. The dual-card payment system was one of the central features of the launch, allowing the new service to connect with existing state transportation payment options.
A separate student feeder route is scheduled to begin Friday, August 7. The free service will connect the Ixtapa intersection with the CUCosta campus and is expected to operate approximately every five minutes.
The electric fleet includes seven articulated buses and 12 conventional units. Depending on the vehicle, capacity ranges from approximately 85 to 120 passengers. The buses have air conditioning, low-floor access, wheelchair spaces, video surveillance and LED lighting.
The project included an estimated 360 million pesos in infrastructure work, including a charging yard, 10 charging stations, new passenger shelters and improvements to existing stops. Seven new paraderos were built, while another 12 are scheduled for rehabilitation.
The launch follows several changes to the project timeline. PVDN previously reported on the expected arrival of the buses and the operational issues that delayed the start of service in its coverage of the planned electric bus launch and the remaining hurdle before operations could begin.
The free introductory period ended Sunday. The 11-peso fare applies beginning Monday, August 3.
