Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco – As of today, Monday, October 7, 2024, Puerto Vallarta Health Centers have begun administering vaccines against the seasonal influenza virus, prioritizing vulnerable groups ahead of the upcoming cold season. The move aims to bolster community immunity before temperatures drop and cases typically increase.
This preemptive vaccination initiative is part of an annual campaign by the Jalisco State Health Secretariat (SSJ), which traditionally launches its official influenza prevention efforts later in October. However, doses are already available at SSJ health units across Puerto Vallarta, providing early access to the biological product for residents most at risk of severe influenza complications.
The health authorities emphasize that obtaining the influenza vaccine prior to the onset of colder weather offers optimal protection. Priority groups for this vaccine include older adults, individuals with pre-existing health conditions such as diabetes and hypertension, and those with immunosuppressive conditions. Additionally, the SSJ is urging parents to bring children under five years of age for vaccination, as they are also highly susceptible to flu-related complications.
Dr. Jaime Álvarez Zayas, director of the VIII Health Region, noted that the campaign’s expanded objectives reflect a regional health goal to increase inoculations from 43,000 doses last year to nearly 60,000 by March 2025. This target responds to a rising awareness of influenza’s impact on vulnerable populations and the need for robust immunity across demographics.
The early availability of the vaccine will allow high-risk individuals to secure their protection well before flu cases peak. Health officials are encouraging early visits to local health centers to help meet vaccination goals and maintain a strong community health defense through the winter season.
For additional information on vaccine availability, residents can contact their nearest health center or visit the official SSJ website.
