Puerto Vallarta seeks 10 artists for Día de Muertos murals

Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Oct. 8, 2026 — Puerto Vallarta’s culture institute seeks 10 artists or collectives for Día de Muertos cemetery murals, with applications due Oct. 19.

The Instituto Vallartense de Cultura’s call for artists covers 10 perimeter walls at the 5 de Diciembre municipal cemetery. Each completed mural pays 7,000 pesos plus value-added tax, the institute says.

The institute’s project schedule sets painting for Oct. 23-29. The unveiling is scheduled for Oct. 30 at 7:30 p.m.

Public art for 5 de Diciembre

The institute describes the planned murals as “a permanent and free art exhibition,” giving the neighborhood an installation intended to remain beyond the festival.

Our November 2025 coverage of the cemetery murals documented work by eight local artists at the same cemetery.

For this year’s project, the institute requires designs that connect Día de Muertos with Puerto Vallarta’s identity. Proposals should incorporate local people, traditions, plants, animals or culture, according to the call.

Complete paperwork required by Oct. 19

We reviewed the institute’s three-page call, dated Oct. 5, which requires complete supplier-registration paperwork before the application deadline.

Required documents include a SAT tax-status certificate issued within 30 days and a favorable tax-compliance opinion. The certificate must include the independent artists and technicians tax regime, according to the institute.

The call also requests identification, proof of address and banking records. Applicants must provide a municipal operating license or explain in writing why that requirement does not apply.

The institute says incomplete documentation will exclude an application. Selected artists must be able to invoice the institute for 7,000 pesos plus VAT, with payment following completion.

How to submit a proposal

Under the institute’s submission requirements, applicants must send a PDF portfolio containing no more than five previous mural projects. They also need a digital sketch in JPG or PDF format.

The proposal must include the work’s title, the artist or collective’s name, and a description of the concept.

The institute will select participants on Oct. 20 and provide primary-color paints, brushes, and rollers. Each wall measures approximately 4 meters wide by 3 meters high. Designated painting hours are 5-10 p.m., according to the call.

Applicants can email proposals and documents to [email protected], copying [email protected].

The call also allows document delivery at the institute’s offices at Aquiles Serdán 437, Interior 38, on Isla del Río Cuale in Emiliano Zapata. For application or paperwork questions, the institute lists 322 223 0095 and 322 113 0107.
