Residents are urged to store water as a planned Puerto Vallarta water outage lowers pressure or cuts service across more than 60 neighborhoods.
Families in northern Puerto Vallarta are being warned to expect weak taps and even dry faucets overnight Wednesday and into Thursday, as the city’s water utility prepares a major cleaning of its main distribution pipes.
The Water, Drainage and Sewerage System, known as Seapal Vallarta, will carry out a planned “macro-release” of water in the north-end network beginning at 10:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 3 and continuing into the afternoon of Thursday, December 4. The work is expected to cause low pressure or temporary loss of service in more than 60 neighborhoods.
According to the utility, the operation will be concentrated at the canal that crosses the intersection of 16 de Septiembre and Politécnico Nacional. Crews will open valves to flush high volumes of water through the pipes, sending controlled flows into the canal as part of a scheduled cleaning rather than an accidental spill.
Over time, naturally occurring minerals such as iron and manganese tend to stick to the interior walls of water mains. Seapal says the macro-release is designed to dislodge those deposits and carry them out of the system so they do not cloud the water reaching homes and businesses. International water-quality agencies generally classify iron and manganese as aesthetic concerns at typical tap levels, because they can cause discoloration and metallic taste even when they are not considered a direct health hazard.
Puerto Vallarta water outage
The utility has identified a long list of affected neighborhoods in the north of the city, stretching from Las Juntas and Ixtapa to Las Mojoneras, the hotel zone and the airport corridor. Colonias such as Agua Zarca, Albatros, Loma Bonita, Aeropuerto, Aramara, Arboledas, Balcones de Vallarta, Díaz Ordaz, Educación, Balcones Los Sauces, Entre Ríos, Fluvial Vallarta, Fovissste 100 and 96, Banus, Costa Dorada, Doctores, El Capricho, Jade and Jardines de las Gaviotas are all on the list.
Other neighborhoods scheduled to experience low pressure or temporary cuts include Las Moras, Los Mangos, Médanos, Los Olivos, Los Sauces, Los Tabachines, Vallarta 750, Versalles, Valle Dorado, Verde Vallarta and Villas Río. The impact extends into Marina Vallarta and surrounding subdivisions such as Marina Yubarta, Vallarta Villas and Valle del Mar, as well as residential areas like Jardines del Puerto and Villas del Prado and education complexes including the University Center of the Coast.
Seapal indicates that low pressure or loss of service may occur from 10:00 p.m. on Wednesday until around 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 4, while the network stabilizes after the cleaning work.
In anticipation, the agency is asking households and businesses to store water in their rooftop tanks or other containers ahead of time where possible. The work has been scheduled overnight to reduce disruption to daily life, while still allowing enough hours for the cleaning to be effective in the most heavily used pipes.
The planned interruption follows a year in which Seapal has reported repeated challenges in maintaining steady service in parts of Puerto Vallarta, particularly in the north of the city and the tourism corridor. The utility has carried out other scheduled cuts and maintenance windows in 2025 as it repairs lines, stabilizes pressure and integrates new infrastructure intended to strengthen the system.
After the valves reopen
Once the macro-release ends and valves are gradually closed, Seapal expects water service to normalize over the course of Thursday afternoon. The stated goal of the operation is clearer water at the tap, as mineral deposits are removed from key segments of the network that feed the affected neighborhoods.
In recent public explanations of its strategy, the agency has framed preventive cleanings and infrastructure projects as part of a broader plan to move from emergency responses toward more predictable service. Officials have acknowledged that the system has been operating close to its limits at times, and that any major repair, electrical failure or maintenance operation can still cause temporary intermissions in different parts of the city.
Even with that context, the message for residents in the more than 60 colonias named for this week’s work is straightforward. Filling household storage tanks before the valves are opened, planning ahead for basic needs such as cooking and hygiene, and being prepared for several hours of weak flow or dry taps can help families get through the planned interruption with fewer surprises.
Puerto Vallarta’s growth as a major beach destination has steadily increased demand for drinking water in recent decades, both from year-round residents and from visitors. Local studies have found that production and consumption in the city are already close to equilibrium in high-demand periods, which leaves little margin when parts of the system are taken offline for maintenance.
Operations like this week’s macro-release underline that tension. They are designed to improve the quality and reliability of the water that reaches homes and businesses, yet they temporarily remind people how dependent daily life is on infrastructure they rarely see.
If the work proceeds on schedule, most taps in the affected neighborhoods should be running normally again by late Thursday afternoon. Until then, the north side of Puerto Vallarta will spend part of midweek living with a familiar trade-off in coastal cities: short-term inconvenience in the hope of a steadier, cleaner supply in the days that follow.
