San Sebastián del Oeste, Jalisco, July 17, 2026 — The overhaul of San Sebastián del Oeste’s historic center has reached 85 percent completion after months of construction that changed access to streets, homes and businesses around the town’s main plaza.
The latest project update from Jalisco’s Secretariat of Infrastructure and Public Works, known as SIOP, places the work in its final phase. The agency reported progress on potable water and sewer infrastructure, pavement replacement, sidewalks, curbs, accessibility improvements, and new public lighting. Restoration of the kiosk in the Plaza Principal is also included.
The scope makes the project more than a cosmetic renovation. Much of the work involves infrastructure beneath the streets, followed by reconstruction of the surfaces that define the historic center’s appearance. Officials have not disclosed in the latest update which portions account for the remaining 15 percent or whether utility, pavement or plaza work will be the last to finish.
A completion date, final project cost and schedule for reopening all affected streets were also not provided. Those details will matter to merchants, property owners and families who have dealt with restricted access since at least November 2025, when the municipal government announced partial and total closures in the first square of town. The notice warned that access to some homes and commercial establishments could be temporarily altered as construction advanced.
Public records indicate that the project has received repeated state supervision rather than advancing without regular inspections. SIOP travel and commission records document visits to review the historic-center work throughout May and June, including inspections involving contractors, municipal personnel and Mayor Aurora Ponce. The records show another inspection of the streets and public plaza on June 22.
The replacement of water and sewer lines is particularly relevant after the municipal government imposed rotating water service in parts of the town this spring. San Sebastián del Oeste began water rationing in May when declining source levels reduced the available supply. The historic-center project may renew aging distribution infrastructure, but officials have not said that it will increase the amount of water available during future dry periods.
San Sebastián del Oeste has held Mexico’s Pueblo Mágico designation since 2011. Jalisco tourism authorities place it about 68 kilometers from Puerto Vallarta, making its plaza and surrounding streets a frequent stop for regional visitors and organized day trips. The historic center’s public spaces also serve as everyday infrastructure for a small municipal seat, not merely as a tourism backdrop.
The renovation is advancing alongside broader investment in connections between Puerto Vallarta and the Sierra Occidental. A separate rehabilitation of State Highway 544 covers the corridor linking Puerto Vallarta with San Sebastián del Oeste and Mascota. State officials have presented the road and Pueblo Mágico projects as part of a regional strategy to attract more visitors beyond the coast, although the historic-center update did not specify which state funding program is paying for the work.
With 15 percent of the project still outstanding, construction zones and temporary access changes may continue around the plaza. The municipality has not yet published a final reopening plan, so people traveling to the town should follow local signs and check for updated street restrictions before entering the historic center.
