Steady Increase in Violent Robberies Against Pedestrians in Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco – Violent robberies against pedestrians in Puerto Vallarta have seen a concerning increase over the past four years, according to data from the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System (SESNSP). This growing trend poses a significant threat to public safety in the popular tourist destination.

Between January 2015 and December 2024, Puerto Vallarta recorded 1,453 cases of pedestrian robberies, both with and without violence. This equates to an annual average of more than 145 incidents.

Statistics indicate that 2018 was the year with the highest number of reported cases, reaching 226 incidents. Other years with high robbery figures include 2015 with 189 cases, 2017 with 181, and 2019 with 143 incidents. In 2024 alone, 119 pedestrian robberies were reported, translating to an average of 3.5 cases per week.

Violent street robberies have steadily increased since 2015. That year saw 78 violent incidents, which rose to 91 in 2016 and 110 in 2017. The figure peaked in 2018, with 146 reported cases.

The following years showed fluctuating numbers, dropping to 84 cases in 2019 and further declining to 53 in 2020. However, a concerning resurgence began in 2021 with 78 cases, climbing to 68 by 2024.

Notably, pedestrian robberies in open spaces with violence were virtually non-existent until 2021, when three cases were reported. The situation escalated rapidly, with 96 cases reported in 2022, followed by 136 in 2023, and 119 in 2024.

The increase in violent crime against pedestrians highlights the urgent need for enhanced public security measures in Puerto Vallarta. Local residents and tourists alike have expressed concerns over personal safety, calling for a stronger police presence and preventive measures to curb the alarming trend.

As Puerto Vallarta continues to be a major tourist destination, maintaining public safety is essential for both the well-being of residents and the city’s reputation. Authorities are expected to review these statistics and develop comprehensive strategies to address this ongoing issue.

Further updates on public security measures and crime trends will be closely monitored to assess progress in reducing robberies against pedestrians.
