fuel tanker overturn cabo corrientes

Tanker overturns on Highway 200 in Cabo Corrientes

Before sunrise on Thursday, a tractor-trailer pulling a double tanker loaded with gasoline overturned on Federal Highway 200 South near the community of Pedro Moreno. The unit landed on its right side and blocked most of a lane. Municipal Civil Protection and Firefighters from Cabo Corrientes responded, secured the area, and confirmed there were no injuries.

Authorities kept the road open under traffic control, but only one lane was available at the scene. They warned drivers to expect intermittent closures while crews transfer the fuel to another unit and tow the tanker from the site. Those short closures are standard when responders must stabilize a heavy vehicle and move flammable cargo safely.

Responders focus on fuel transfer and ignition control

With gasoline spills, the priorities are straightforward: isolate the scene, eliminate ignition sources, and move the product out of a damaged vessel if needed. In practice, that means creating a safety perimeter, diverting traffic to reduce spark and heat risks, and then using grounding, bonding, and compatible pumps or vacuum units to transfer the fuel. Those steps take time. The payoff is a controlled lift and tow that reduces the chance of fire or secondary leaks.

Highway 200 is the Pacific spine that links Puerto Vallarta with Tomatlán and points south. It narrows, twists, and climbs; during the rainy season, rockfall adds another variable. Over recent months, the route has seen closures and slowdowns due to crashes and debris removal. On June 20, municipal authorities reported rockfall near Barranca Honda and moved traffic through a single lane while crews cleared the road. Five days ago, a passenger bus caught fire between El Columpio and Pedro Moreno; no one was hurt, but the incident again squeezed Highway 200 into one-lane traffic during the tow.

None of that is unusual for this corridor. For heavy units—especially those pulling double tanks—sharp curves, grades, and sudden braking can push equipment and drivers to their limits. Today’s overturning is a familiar pattern: no injuries, enormous logistics.

What drivers should do today

If you’re heading south of Puerto Vallarta, build extra time into your trip. Expect a flagger or patrol to hold traffic in both directions during the lift or while fuel is transferred. Keep a distance from the scene, switch off cigarette lighters, and avoid idling near responders. If you can, plan your stop well past the incident so heavy machinery and recovery crews have space to work. The priority is to clear the unit without turning a traffic event into a fire scene.
