Trudy Moves Offshore as Dangerous Surf Persists Today

Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, October 19, 2026 — Trudy moved farther offshore Monday, but dangerous surf and rip currents remain a coastal threat, the National Hurricane Center warned.

The NHC’s 9 a.m. Puerto Vallarta-time advisory placed the tropical storm 310 kilometers west-southwest of Cabo Corrientes, with maximum sustained winds of 95 km/h. It was moving west-southwest at 11 km/h, and no coastal watches or warnings were in effect.

For residents considering a swim or a boat trip, the immediate question is whether Trudy’s retreat means water activities can resume.

The advisory provides no such clearance. It says swells will continue affecting portions of southwestern and west-central Mexico today, producing “life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.”

The Port Captain also ordered the closure to all navigation covered by Vallarta Daily beginning at 7 p.m. Saturday. The measure covered both large and small vessels across the jurisdiction encompassing Puerto Vallarta, Cabo Corrientes and Tomatlán.

Separate evidence shows rough seas remain a concern. In its 10 a.m. maritime bulletin, Mexico’s Navy forecast elevated waves of 5 to 7 feet, approximately 1.5 to 2.1 meters, along the coasts of Nayarit, Jalisco and Colima. That is a regional forecast, rather than a measurement at every beach in Banderas Bay.

The danger also extends beyond the height of a breaking wave. The NHC’s explanation of rip currents describes powerful flows that carry water away from shore. They can develop near piers and rocks or through gaps in sandbars, and a seemingly calmer channel between breaking waves can itself signal a current.

Trudy is forecast to weaken over the next couple of days and become a post-tropical cyclone by early Tuesday. The next complete NHC advisory is scheduled for 3 p.m. Puerto Vallarta time.

For anyone with a water taxi, fishing excursion or other boat trip booked today, confirm the latest navigation authorization and departure with the operator before heading to the pier. At the beach, a red flag means keeping the swim off the day’s plans.
