Brian Matthew Faughan accident: The U.S. vice consul in Monterrey died after his Toyota pickup overturned on the Torreón-Saltillo highway near La Cuchilla, according to Coahuila authorities.
Brian Matthew Faughan, vice consul of the United States Consulate General in Monterrey, died late Wednesday night following a single-vehicle accident on the Torreón-Saltillo highway, the Coahuila Attorney General’s Office confirmed.
According to the official report, Faughan was driving a white Toyota pickup truck when it overturned at approximately 5:30 p.m. on the stretch known locally as La Cuchilla. The vehicle left the roadway and rolled several times before coming to rest on its side. Local witnesses immediately called for assistance, and crews from Matamoros Civil Protection and the Matamoros Red Cross arrived on the scene within minutes.
Paramedics stabilized Faughan at the site and transferred him by ambulance to a nearby medical center in Matamoros. Despite emergency treatment, he succumbed to his injuries several hours later. Authorities noted that the pickup truck was completely destroyed in the crash.
State investigators from the Coahuila Attorney General’s Office are conducting a technical analysis of the accident scene to determine contributing factors. Preliminary findings have not ruled out road conditions or mechanical failure, and further forensic examination of both the vehicle and roadway is under way.
The Consulate General in Monterrey has been notified, and U.S. diplomatic staff are coordinating with local officials to manage consular notifications and next-of-kin support. No additional U.S. personnel were involved in the incident, and consular services in Monterrey continue to operate normally.
Faughan had served as vice consul since early 2023, overseeing visa and citizen services in northeastern Mexico. His duties included facilitating trade relations, assisting American citizens in distress, and supporting diplomatic engagement between the U.S. and Mexican authorities.
As investigators work to piece together the circumstances of the crash, the Coahuila Attorney General’s Office urged motorists traveling the Torreón-Saltillo corridor to exercise caution, especially at La Cuchilla, where the road’s steep grade and sharp curves have been associated with previous traffic incidents.
The U.S. Consulate General in Monterrey is expected to issue a formal statement once next-of-kin notifications are complete and further details are confirmed.
