Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – Meteorologist Víctor Manuel Cornejo López has issued a warning regarding the anticipated high temperatures and below-average rainfall for Puerto Vallarta during the current hurricane season. This trend is expected to exacerbate the ongoing drought and water scarcity issues across the region.
Cornejo explained that meteorological models predict above-average temperatures from June through December. “Last year we experienced similar conditions, and this year will be no different for Puerto Vallarta,” he noted.
As June approaches, another anticyclonic high is developing in the region of Jalisco, contributing to the expected increase in temperatures.
Currently, the Bahía de Banderas region has not experienced as intense heat as other areas, partly due to cooler-than-normal sea temperatures. “We’ve enjoyed cooler sunrises because the adjacent sea is colder than usual. In previous years, when the sea is warmer by this time, we already face significant heat,” Cornejo explained.
He contrasted this with the metropolitan area of Guadalajara, where temperatures have been significantly higher than those in Puerto Vallarta, at least for now.
Cornejo pointed out that the current climate is in an intermediate phase between the “El Niño” and “La Niña” phenomena. Forecasts suggest a shift towards “La Niña,” which typically brings colder sea water. Both phenomena tend to exacerbate drought conditions in Mexico, but “La Niña” is particularly influential in this regard, leading to the formation of cyclones closer to the coast with erratic trajectories.
This year’s climate patterns underscore the importance of preparing for prolonged periods of high temperatures and managing water resources carefully to mitigate the impact of drought. Local authorities and residents are urged to stay informed and take necessary precautions to address the challenges posed by the anticipated weather conditions.
