Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, August 10, 2026 – Households and businesses across nearly two-fifths of Puerto Vallarta are being told to prepare for a water interruption that begins Wednesday morning and may not reach the city’s highest neighborhoods until Sunday.
SEAPAL Vallarta said service will be suspended in 142 colonias and residential developments beginning at 6 a.m. Wednesday, August 12. The affected territory covers much of northern Puerto Vallarta, including Las Juntas, Las Mojoneras, Marina Vallarta, Aramara, Fluvial Vallarta and large sections of El Pitillal.
The shutdown is needed while the concessionaire building the Puerto Vallarta–Las Varas highway completes four connections between new and existing water lines. The work involves a 24-inch filling line and a 36-inch outlet line serving the Tanque San Francisco, according to the notice distributed by SEAPAL.
The highway concessionaire is carrying out the pipe relocation and rehabilitation. SEAPAL will supervise the connections, operate valves, manage water remaining in storage tanks, and stabilize the Cerro del Machete water-treatment plant as the system comes back online.
Restoration will depend on elevation and pressure
SEAPAL expects service to begin returning in stages rather than immediately after the connections are completed.
Around 80 affected areas are scheduled to begin recovering service by midday Friday. These are mainly lower and middle-elevation sectors between Las Juntas and the Luis Donaldo Colosio bypass, along with some middle sections of El Pitillal. Low pressure could continue throughout the weekend.
Another 52 areas are expected to begin receiving water Saturday morning, mainly in the middle and upper sections of El Pitillal. SEAPAL named Coapinole, Volcanes and El Progreso among the sectors in this stage and warned that service could remain intermittent while tanks refill.
The final 10 areas, located in the highest sections of El Pitillal, are not expected to have service restored until Sunday morning.
Those times describe when water may begin moving back into each section of the network. They do not guarantee normal household pressure at that hour. A roof tank, condominium cistern or building pump may require additional time after street-level service returns.
SEAPAL’s summary lists a total of 142 colonias and developments. The accompanying schedules are more complicated because some entries combine adjoining subdivisions, while others name delegations, residential phases or individual facilities. Some local counts therefore place the number of named locations closer to 139. Readers should consult the neighborhood schedule published with the alert rather than relying only on the citywide total.
Third large disruption tied to highway work
This will be the third major interruption related to water infrastructure, aside from the highway project, in less than two months.
A planned first stage affected 136 neighborhoods beginning June 22. SEAPAL later reported that complete restoration took several days as tanks and pressure levels recovered. Vallarta Daily covered the earlier water shutdown in northern Puerto Vallarta.
Another interruption affected 139 areas in late July after the concessionaire had to repair a leak in a line that feeds the same Tanque San Francisco. Water began returning gradually, but SEAPAL said the highest parts of El Pitillal were again the last to normalize.
That history makes the distinction between initial restoration and normal service important. Properties in the Sunday group could go roughly four days before recovery begins, followed by additional periods of low pressure or intermittent flow.
SEAPAL previously advised households to maintain enough stored water to cover at least 72 hours. Homes, condominium buildings and businesses in higher areas may need more capacity during this shutdown. Building managers should check cistern levels and pumping systems before Wednesday rather than assuming shared storage will last through the weekend.
The current announcement does not include a public tanker delivery schedule or a firm time for when normal pressure will return throughout the affected area.
