Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, July 21, 2026 – Drivers using the Avenida México and Avenida Las Palmas junction in Mojoneras should expect reduced road capacity through Monday, July 27, while SEAPAL Vallarta repairs a sanitary sewer line beneath the intersection.
The work affects the inside travel lanes in both directions on Avenida México. Outside lanes are expected to remain open, making this a partial restriction rather than a complete closure. The initial local report advised drivers to allow additional travel time or choose another route.
The restriction sits on a heavily used northern corridor that carries traffic between Ixtapa, Las Palmas, Mojoneras and the main urban area. The city previously announced a four-lane expansion of Avenida México between Ixtapa and Mojoneras after years of congestion along the route.
Traffic is likely to compress as vehicles merge around the work zone, with the greatest pressure expected during morning travel toward central Puerto Vallarta and afternoon travel toward Mojoneras and Ixtapa. No official detour was included in the initial notice, leaving drivers to choose alternate streets before reaching the intersection.
The location has a long history of sanitary infrastructure work. A wastewater line ruptured at Avenida México and Las Palmas in March 2019, sending sewage into nearby streets and triggering repairs and environmental monitoring.
In 2020, SEAPAL identified the Centro-Norte collector as the main wastewater collection line serving the city and estimated that 5.6 kilometers still required reconstruction. The agency later installed a new 48-inch pressure line linking Parque Las Palmas with the Norte II treatment plant in Las Juntas.
SEAPAL has not said whether this week’s repair involves the same line that failed in 2019 or another component beneath the intersection. The agency also has not reported a drinking-water interruption tied to the work.
The repairs begin during a period of increased strain across the city’s water and sewer network. In a July 17 report, SEAPAL said rainy-season conditions raise reported leaks and pipe ruptures by at least 25 percent. The agency estimated that more than 40 percent of Puerto Vallarta’s roughly 4,000 kilometers of water and sanitary pipes are approaching the end of their service life.
A separate collapse on the Centro-Norte collector near Avenida México and Prisciliano Sánchez required a major reconstruction project in June. That work involved an excavation deeper than six meters and protection of a 24-inch drinking-water main. SEAPAL completed the reconstruction and restored the roadway later that month.
At Mojoneras, drivers should plan around the reduced lanes through July 27 and avoid assuming the junction will operate normally outside visible construction activity. Road restoration, curing time, and equipment movements can keep restrictions in place even when crews are not working at the surface.
