Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, August 26, 2026 – A construction worker suffered serious injuries Wednesday after falling about four meters into an elevator shaft and landing in the basement of the new CMQ hospital tower under construction in Fluvial Vallarta.
The worker, described as approximately 40 to 45 years old, was working at the site on Avenida Grandes Lagos between Río Paraná and Río Nilo. He was unconscious when coworkers reached him and called emergency services.
Municipal police and Puerto Vallarta Civil Protection and Fire Department personnel entered the construction area and carried out the rescue. Crews stabilized the worker before moving him from the basement. A CMQ ambulance then transported him to an IMSS medical facility to receive specialized treatment.
Wednesday’s fall occurred at CMQ’s new Fluvial hospital, a separate facility from the operating CMQ Premiere hospital on Avenida Francisco Villa. Early local descriptions identified the project as a new CMQ Premiere tower, while CMQ has promoted it as its new hospital in Fluvial Vallarta.
CMQ unveiled the Grandes Lagos project in July 2025, saying the hospital would include more than 40 beds, an intensive care unit and new operating rooms. PVDN’s August Fluvial neighborhood report identified the tower as one of the area’s largest projects under construction.
The shaft described in Wednesday’s report falls within the hazards addressed by Mexico’s NOM-009-STPS-2011 work-at-height standard, which remains active. The rule covers vertical openings and requires fixed barriers, perimeter protection, safety nets or personal fall-arrest systems, along with trained and authorized workers and an emergency response plan.
The rescue took place less than nine months after a separate construction death on Avenida México, where a 27-year-old worker fell from the 12th floor of The Lighthouse project in December 2025. Wednesday’s worker was alive when he was transferred to IMSS.
